3.1 THESIS STATEMENT ABOUT YOUR TOPIC: Working students often struggle with their
academic performance.

3.2. ISSUE: There are limited studies about the lived experiences and struggles of working

students with their academic performance.

4.RESEARCH METHOD: Qualitative

5.1 RESEARCH DESIGN: Phenomenology

5.2 DEFINITION OF CHOSEN RESEARCH DESIGN: According to Delve. Ho L., &

Limpaecher, A. (2022c, March 17) The phenomenology study focuses on investigating and
understanding the daily life experiences of humans; thus, the researchers already have
preconceptions about the phenomenon. In simple words, phenomenological research is a
study of lived experiences to broaden the researcher's insights regarding a specific
phenomenon.

5.4.JUSTIFICATION FOR CHOOSING THE RESEARCH DESIGN:

A phenomenological research design will be the most appropriate research design for this
study because we will gather information and experiences of students who actually go
through this struggle.

6.1. PARTICIPANTS: Working students who are struggling with their academic performance

6.2 TARGET NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 3

6.3 REASON FOR CHOOSING THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: Creswell (2013)

recommends interviewing 3-10 participants, pointing out that it is crucial to describe the
meaning of the phenomenon with a small number of participants who have experienced it.

6.4 SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Snowball sampling.

7.DATA COLLECTION METHOD: This study will be carried out with the use of open-ended
questionnaires, surveys, and in-person interviews.

8.1 MAIN RESEARCH QUESTION/PROBLEM: Struggles of working students with regard to

their academic performance.

8.2 SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION/PROBLEM 1: What are the driving forces of

students to work while studying?

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7

8.3 SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION 2: How do working students balance and manage
their time between work and study?

8.4.SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION 3: How do students cope with poor academic

performance?

9.1 MAIN RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze
the lived experiences of working students who are having difficulty with their academic
performance.

9.2 SPECIFIC RESEARCH OBJECTIVE 1: To gain insights about the factors that drive
students to work while also studying.

9.3 SPECIFIC RESEARCH OBJECTIVE 2: To understand how students maximize their time
in working and studying.

9.4 SPECIFIC RESEARCH OBJECTIVE 3: To recognize and acknowledge students’ attempt

to cope with poor academic performance.

10.CONTRIBUTION OF THE STUDY: The findings of this study would help address the
struggle of working students with their academic performance thus helping them perform well
in school and improve their skills.

11.6 DIRECT QUOTATION OF STATEMENT ABOUT THE TOPIC FROM THE SOURCE
ARTICLE OR THESIS STATEMENT FROM THE ABSTRACT:
“Kleinschmidt, (2013) points out one of the negative effects of working and studying which is
plain exhaustion from the routine of being constantly on the go. The less sleep college
students get, the more likely anxiety and stress heighten as they try to keep up with their
jammed-packed schedules. Steinberg and Dornbusch (1991 in Watanabe, 2005), stated that
overloaded students have decreased attitudes toward academics. Working full time or
working for more hours further decreases a student’s college grade point average (GPA) and

is negatively related to completion of a bachelor's degree (Astin, 1993 in Watanabe, 2005).

The college administration may look at the factor of allowing students to work full time or
excess time that may affect their academics”

11.7 SUMMARIZED IDEA ABOUT THE TOPIC FROM THE SOURCE

ARTICLE/PARAPHRASED FINDINGS OF THE STUDY from the ABSTRACT(1-3
SENTENCES ONLY):
This study investigated the lived experiences and struggles of 22-on campus-working
students of ISAT U-Miagao Campus, the finding of the study revealed that the effects of work
on students' academic performance might vary depending on the type of job and working
hours held by the students. In addition, this research has shown that students with shorter
working hours positively impact their academic performance. On the other hand, students
who work longer have a negative impact on their academic performance.

13.6 DIRECT QUOTATION OF THESIS STATEMENT FROM THE ABSTRACT:

“According to the findings of the study conducted by Williams (2014), the reasons why
students work is due to budgetary need, meet a quick or basic necessity, and to help the
understudies in their future objectives. This was supported by the study of Furr and Elling
(2002), where the reason why the students work part-time is due to financial problems.”.

13.7 SUMMARIZED/PARAPHRASED FINDINGS OF THE STUDY from the ABSTRACT

(1-3 SENTENCES ONLY):
This study explores the lived experiences of working students, including the driving forces
that push students to work while they are simultaneously pursuing their education. In this
study, the researchers utilized the snowball method to gather participants' responses based
on their insights on working while studying. The responses indicated that financial instability,
opportunities for self-improvement, and intrinsic motivation to integrate theory and practice
are only a few of the primary driving forces for students to maintain employment while
pursuing higher education.

13.8 RECOMMENDATION/S OF THE STUDY(1-2 sentences only):

Since it is a struggle to pursue education while working to sustain financial needs, perform
intrinsic motivation, and pay for their tuition fees, working students should view studying as
their time for working, for this might give them more incentive to pursue their goals while
supporting themselves financially.
