TIMELINE OF JOSE RIZAL’S EDUCATION IN PHILIPPINES AND ABROAD

Dec. 18, 1870 - Rizal returned to Calamba from Binan after studying a year and a half.
1871 - Jose continues his education under the instruction of Lucas Padua.
June 10, 1872 - Rizal took the entrance exam in Ateneo.
1875 - Rizal enters the Ateneo as a boarder at just 14 years of age.
March 14, 1877 - Rizal graduated with high honors in Ateneo Municipal.
June 1877 – Rizal entered Sto. Tomas University in the Philosophy course.
1878 - Rizal shifted courses from Philosophy to Medicine because of his mother's
failing eyesight.
November 25, 1881 - Rizal acquired the title of "perito agrimensor" (expert surveyor
when he studied vocations course in Ateneo.
May 3, 1882 - Rizal gets money from his brother, Paciano, and travels secretly from
Manila to Spain.
June 16, 1882 - Rizal reached Barcelona and was able to meet up with his former
classmates in Ateneo.
August 18, 1882 - Rizal an essay wrote entitled "El Amor Patrio" (Love of country)
and published it in Diaryong Tagalog.
August 20, 1882 – His article “Amor Patrio” was published in the Diarong Tagalog, a
Manila newspaper edited by Basilio Teodoro. This was the First article he wrote
abroad.
September 2, 1882 – Rizal matriculated at the Universidad Central de Madrid. He
took the following subjects: medical clinic, surgical clinic, legal medicine and
obstetrical clinic.
October 3, 1882 – Rizal began his studies in Madrid. He attended his regular classes
which stared in all earnest.
November 2, 1882 – He wrote the article “Revista de Madrid” which was in
intended for publication in the Diarong Tagalog in Manila but was not published
because the newspaper stop its circulation.
November 7, 1882 – Rizal wrote an article “Las Dudas”. The article was signed
Laong – Laan.
May 26, 1883 – In a letter, Rizal was informed by Paciano of the 1,350 loaves of
milled sugar produced from the Pansol farm and at the same time granting him to
proceed to Paris as soon as he finished the medical course in Madrid.
September 28, 1883 – He enrolled at the central Universidad de Madrid for the second
course in medicine.
November 21, 1883 – Rizal informed his family of his plan to graduate in medicine at
the end of the course in June.
January 2, 1884 - Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines written
by a group of Filipinos.
June 5, 1884 – He took the examination on medical clinic, 2nd course, at Central
University de Madrid.
June 6, 1884 – He took his examination in his last subject in Medicine, Surgical clinic,
2nd course. He got grade of “very good.”
June 9, 1884 – Rizal filed an application for graduation for the decree of Licentiate in
Medicine.
June 13, 1884 – He took the examination in Greek and Latin literature. He obtained a
grade of “excellent” in both subjects.
June 14, 1884 – He took an examination in Greek, 1st course, and got a grade of
“excellent.”
June 17, 1884 – Rizal pawned his ring to pay the fees for the examination. June 21,
1884 – He finished the degree of Licentiate in Medicine with the grade of aprobado
from the Central Universidad de Madrid.
June 26, 1884 – He took an examination in Universal History, 2nd course. He
got a grade of “excellent.
June 19, 1885 - Rizal finished the degree in Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters with
grade sobresaliente from the Central Universidad of Madrid.
September 30, 1885 – He was issued a diploma of ordinary prize on Hebrew
language, obtained during the examination offered last June 13 at the Central
Universidad de Madrid. He was also issued on his date another diploma of ordinary
prize on Greek language, 2nd course.
1885-1886 - Rizal specialized in ophthalmology.
October 1, 1885 – Rizal planned to leave Madrid by the middle of the month. He
intended to go to Germany to learn the German language and to study advance course
on ophthalmology.
December 4, 1885 – He was practicing ophthalmology with Dr. Wecker at the Crugen
Clinic.
March 14, 1877 - Jose Rizal received his Bachelor of Arts with a grade of
"sobresaliente" with highest honor.
March 21, 1887 - Rizal published Noli Me Tangere with the help of Maximo Viola.
