The Chinese Arts

Chinese art is visual art that, whether ancient or modern, originated in or is practiced

in Greater China, be it the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Republic of China
(ROC), or by Chinese artists. The Chinese arts' early beginnings were based on the
religious and supernatural beliefs of Chinese settlers. Chinese sculpture has existed
since the beginning of the first dynasty in 2,100 BC. One of the best preserved and
largest examples ever recovered is the Terracotta Army.

Baroque Art and Rococo Art

The term Baroque, derived from the Portuguese 'barocco' meaning 'irregular pearl or
stone', refers to a cultural and art movement that characterized Europe from the early
seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century. Baroque emphasizes dramatic, exaggerated
motion and clear, easily interpreted, detail. While, French Rococo painting in general
was characterized by easygoing, lighthearted treatments of mythological and courtship
themes, rich and delicate brushwork, a relatively light tonal key, and sensuous
colouring. Rococo sculpture was notable for its intimate scale, its naturalism, and its
varied surface effects.
