and up to 50◦ turn interval
3. Identify maximum reach using existing rig package
and DP for regular, negative section type wells
4. Analyze the impact on casing / drill pipe wear in
negative‐section type wells
– Offset well review to calibrate modeling
Abu Dhabi – Field Map
Bab Field – Pad Drilling
Conclusions – Offset Well ReviewReview
• BB‐941 with 9,043’ lateral drilled to TD and completed
without any significant problems
• Max OBT ‐ 6⅛” lateral TD only 9 k ft‐lbs (Torque FF = ±0.25),
possible to drill further using RSS
• Hole cleaning parameters good, hole condition appears good
• Managing ECD is the key technical challenge
– Max ECD 12.1 ppg (90.5 pcf) at TD, no losses experienced
• The addition of LCM materials appears to have worked well in
the 8½” section (no losses)
• Low SO FF’s of 0.1 – 0.2 while RIH 4½”x3½” slotted liner
• Operational practices for high angle drilling can be improved
• 10k Lateral ERD well is feasible per K&M Basis of Design
– Mechanical loads within Bomco rig capability
• Negative displacement well GThA23 NOT feasible as
planned:
– Multiple technical issues (see key issues slide)
– Shorten 10k lateral to 5k, solution still required for 7”
cementing ECDs
– Alternatively drill well “business as usual” off pad
• Maximum reach for 2D “regular 2D well” is ±14k lateral
– Reach could be further extended with simple changes
Recommendations ‐ 1
• Wellpath design for 10k Lateral ERD well:
– Rev 3 (44◦ Nahr Umr shale) is the recommended trajectory
• Casing and drill pipe wear management
– Casing wear is primarily an issue for “negative section” well
– Minimize casing wear potential by designing trajectories to
keep sideforces <2000 lbs/tooljoint
• Reduce upper BUR to <4 deg/100’, minimize tortuosity
– Minimize backreaming
– Mitigate wear with NRDPP (only if required, ECD increase)
– Or alternatively drill “off pad”
• Casing design
– Set 9⅝” as liner for higher stepout wells
• For wells with 5k stepout to heel allows cementing without losses
• Allows for slightly lower ECD while drilling lateral
– 7” 26# CRA liner (versus existing 29#) to drill 6⅛” hole
– Higher torque 7“ connections (versus existing VAGT)
• For example Hydril 563 31.2 k‐ft‐lbs (80% of yield torque)
• Allows for rotation while cementing
Recommendations ‐ 3
• Fluid properties / type
– 8½” ‐ Consider study to understand loss mechanisms and optimise LCM
treatment
– 6⅛” ‐ Add sized Calcium carbonate to act as a bridging agent to
minimize differential sticking / formation damage
– Run the 6 RPM reading of the mud at ±5‐6 for ECD
– Addition of SAFESCAV HS and Zinc Carbonate for H2S
• ECD management
– Establish updated ECD limits based on updated geo‐mechanics model
(minimum horizontal stress)
– Under‐ream longer laterals to 6¾”
– Or if feasible set 9⅝” as liner, e back a er drilling lateral
Recommendations ‐ 5
• Casing & completion running methods
– Slotted liner relies on low friction per offset
– Upgrading 4½“ liner connections allows reaming if required
(assumes slots do not reduce pipe torsional limit)
• For example Hydril 563 ‐ 10.1 k‐ft‐lbs (80% of yield torque) or
Buttress with Tesco torque rings ( ‐ 8.2 k‐ft‐lbs)
– Alternatively use DP swivel to allow drill string rotation +
HWDP to increase buckling resistance of landing string
Recommendations ‐ 6
• Recommended optimizations
– Inspect tooljoints to keep OD, new VX39 MUT = 20.7 k ft‐lbs
– Considered lighter 4” drill pipe e.g. 4" 14#, lowers T&D e.g.
6⅛” OBT from 29 to 27.4 k ft‐lbs on negative section well
• Need to ensure no decrease in MUT, VX39 premium 13.9 k ft‐lbs
• Hole cleaning
– Eliminate pumping sweeps once the hole inclination is >30°
• Note: Sweeps will not improve hole cleaning and have a detrimental
impact on mud properties and ECD
– Eliminate wiper trips for hole cleaning
“10k Lateral ERD well ” – Conclusions
• 10k Lateral ERD well is
feasible per K&M Design
– Mechanical loads within Bomco
rig capability
– Higher torque 7” liner
connections required
“10K Lateral ERD Well” – Key Issues
• Torque in the 6⅛” approaches the MUT limit of the 4" 15.7#
DP (0.3 Torque FF)
– The MU torque of the 4” 15.7# could be increased by 33% from 15k ft‐
lbs to 20k ft‐lbs if the tooljoints OD = 4⅞” (as new)
• ECD @ 6⅛” TD is 100 – 110 pcf >100 pcf ( 0.7 psi/ft limit)
– Under‐ream to 6¾” hole reduces base case ECD from 105 to 98 pcf
– 9⅝” Set as liner, ed back a er drilling the lateral ‐ improves base
case ECD from 105 to 102 pcf
• 4½” Slotted Liner will only run for SOFF ≤0.25
• Exceed 4½” liner MUT rotating for Torque FF>0.2
– Upgrading 4½“ liner connections allows reaming if required
– Alternatively running DP swivel allows for increased SOFF ≤0.30
• GThA‐23 NOT feasible as planned
with 10k lateral
– Several technical issues
– Max achievable reach is ± 5k lateral
– Solution still required for cementing
7” liner without losses
• Drill “business as usual” off pad
“Negative Section Well” – Key Issues
• 7” liner cementing ECD’s 107 ‐ 111
• <50k overpull available at TD (PUFF=0.35)
– Upgrade 5 ½” 21.9# to new 24.7# (assuming 105 ksi max grade)
• Torque in the 6” approaches the MUT limit of the 4" 15.7# DP
– The MU torque of the 4” 15.7# could be increased by 33% from 15k ft‐
lbs to 20k ft‐lbs if the tooljoints OD = 4⅞” (as new)
• ECD at 6” TD is 101 – 113 pcf > ( 0.7 psi/ft limit) ‐ risk of losses
– Drilling 6⅛ versus 6” hole reduces ECD at TD by 3 pcf
– Under‐ream to 6¾” hole reduces ECD at TD by 12 pcf
– Set 9⅝” as liner reduces ECD at TD by 3 pcf
“Regular Well” – Conclusions
• Regular well based on BB‐247 (2D
well profile, 1,000’ stepout ‐ heel)
• Max reach is ±14k lateral
• Limiting factors:
• 4” 15.7# DP MUT
• Running the 4½” slotted liner
• Base Case ECD = 100 pcf
• Reach could be further extended
with simple changes e.g. upgrading
the 4” DP
• Torque in the 6⅛” equals the MUT limit of the 4"
15.7# DP (0.3 Torque FF)
– The MU torque of the 4” 15.7# could be increased by 33% from 15k ft‐
lbs to 20k ft‐lbs if the tooljoints OD = 4⅞” (as new)
• Sideforces in 9⅝”> casing wear threshold of 2 k‐
lbs/tooljoint backreaming
– Redesign trajectory
– Minimize backreaming
– Mitigate wear with NRDPP in the upper build (only if
required)
“Regular Well” – Key Issues
• Max flow = 280 gpm@TD (SPP=4,600 psi, 5½” liners)
– Annular velocity >200 ft/min (ideal hole cleaning)
– 250 gpm@TD (SPP=4,000 psi, 6” liners) would be OK
• ECD @ 6⅛” TD is 96 – 105 pcf <100 pcf ( 0.7 psi/ft
limit) provided 6 rpm is 8 max
– 9⅝” Set as liner, ed back a er drilling the lateral ‐
improves base case ECD from 100 to 98 pcf
• 4½”Liner will only run for SOFF ≤0.20
• Exceed 4½” liner MUT rotating for Torque FF>0.2
– Upgrading 4½“ liner connections allows reaming if required
• Survey for – “10K
Lateral ERD Well”
• 5k step out to heel
• 50 ◦ Azimuth turn
• Rev 3 selected to keep
44◦ inc @ N.Umr shale
• Tortuosity applied to
simulate actual survey
• High swab load running
9⅝” casing
– avoid picking up
otherwise swab effect
on Nahr Umr shale
7” Liner ‐ Cementing
6⅛” Section ‐ T&D
• Torque in the 6⅛”
equals the MUT limit of
the 4" 15.7# DP (0.32
Torque FF)
• Swab below HB‐1
reservoir pressure for
pulling speeds < 4mins /
stand
Running Slotted Liner
• 4½”Liner will just run
for SOFF ≤0.25
• Buckling of the 4½”
liner / 4” DP is the issue
Running Slotted Liner
• Reaming is not likely
possible
– OBT > 4½” MUT (0.25 FF)
– Liner MUT is ± 5 k ft‐lbs
– Upgrade connection e.g.
Hydril 563 ± 10 k ft‐lbs
– or Buttress with Tesco
torque ring ± 8 k ft‐lbs
• Alternative solution –
run swivel above liner
– With DP rotation only can
now run for 0.3 SO FF
Detailed Discussions –
TH‐A, 10k Lateral “Negative Section” well with 7k Step out, and 161° Turn
8 ½” ‐ T&D
7” Liner ‐ T&D
• Can circulate mud
• Cementing ECDs exceed
100 pcf (0.7 psi/ft) –
losses likely
7” Liner on 5” DP ‐ ECD
• Design Cementing ECDs
< 100 pcf (0.7 psi/ft):
– Using 5” DP (versus 5½”)
– 105 pcf lead
– Slow final displacement
No overpull capability at TD
6” Section ‐ T&D
Drill shorter lateral or use new, heavier wall 5½” 24.7# DP at top
Torque in the 6” exceeds the MUT limit of the 5½ " 21.9# DP (0.35 Torque FF)
6” Section ‐ T&D
Sideforces in 9⅝” > casing wear
threshold of 2 k‐lbs/tooljoint ‐
back reaming
– Redesign trajectory to reduce
upper BUR to <4 deg/100’
– Minimize tortuosity
– Minimize backreaming
– Use 14# 4” DP (not 15.7#)
– Or drill off pad (preferred option)
6” Section ‐ Hydraulics
ECD most sensitive to
rheology
• Thin mud with 6 rpm of 5‐6
Hole size
• Under‐ream to 6¾”
6” Section ‐ Hydraulics
Exceed 100 pcf even for 20% thinner mud Drill shorter 5K lateral
6-3/4” UR OH (reduces ECD by 12 pcf) 6⅛” OH w/9-5/8” liner (reduces ECD by 8 pcf)
Running Slotted Liner
4½” liner will run for SOFF ≤ 0.4, rotation not an option
• Survey for BB‐247
“regular 2 D well” with
1,000’ step out to heel
extended to 14k lateral
• Medium tortuosity
applied to extension to
simulate geosteering
• Torque in the 6⅛”
equals the MUT limit of
the 4" 15.7# DP (0.3
Torque FF)
• Sideforces in 9⅝” >
casing wear threshold
of 2 k‐lbs/tooljoint
while backreaming
– Minimize backreaming
Running Slotted Liner
• 4½”Liner will only run
for SOFF ≤0.20 very low
friction seen on offset
• Buckling of the 4½”
liner / 4” DP is the issue
Running Slotted Liner
• Reaming is not likely
possible
– OBT > 4½” MUT (0.2 FF)
– MUT is only ± 5 k ft‐lbs
– Upgrade connection e.g.
Hydril 563 ± 10 k ft‐lbs
– or Buttress with Tesco
torque ring ± 8 k ft‐lbs
• Using tapered 3½”x 4½”
• 4½”Liner will now just
run for SOFF ≤0.25
Running Slotted Liner
• Using tapered 3½”x 4½”
• Reaming is still not
likely possible
– OBT > 4½” MUT (0.2 FF)
– MUT is only ± 5 k ft‐lbs
