Medium Frequency
current are the currents whose frequency falls
between range of 1000 to 10,000 Hz.
There are three types of medium frequency currents such as
1. REBOX- Types Current
2. Russian Current
3. Interferential Current /Therapy
➢ Derived from device called Rebox
➢ Point electrode and hand hold device
➢ Device consists of microammeter and earphone
➢ Currents produced uni-polar
➢ Shape is Rectangular
➢ Pulse generated b/w 50microsec and 250microsec at 3000Hz
➢ Evenly atterrating current
➢ Frequency 250Hz
➢ Polyphasic AC waveforms
➢ 50 periods 20ms duration consisting of 10ms Burst and
10ms interval
➢ Each 10ms burst contain 25 cycles of AC
➢ Two basic waveforms are used . A single sin wave and a
square waveforms with a fined intrapulse interval.
➢ Introduced by Ho- Nemec ( Nemic current)
➢ Two medium frequency currents are used to produced low
frequency currents
➢ Out of these one current is always 4000Hz (because
minimum impedence)
➢ Other current can varied accordingly
➢ IFT depends upon the principle of IFT effect of two
medium frequency currents
➢ The Interference produced by two currents in the tissue
called beat frequency
➢ First channel frequency can be varied (1-250Hz)
 Impedence :
Resistance , capacitance, inductance all collectively
called impedence .Denoted by Z
 Phase:

Current travelling from 0 to 180 degree is in the same

phase and current travelling from 180 to 360 degree is in the
opposite phase.
 Sweep Frequency:

Sweep frequency is the frequency which can

be directly fed to the beat frequency.
Flexible electrodes are used which are taped
or bounded to skin by vaccume electrodes which used suction
to maintain contact. Usually four electrodes are used in IFT and
two electrodes are used in the treatment.

 Spectrum :
Denotes the range of frequency during treatment .
Advantage is that tissue does not adopt to a certain frequency
and treatment perform for a longer period of time.
❖ Skin must be clean
❖ Treated part should be washed
❖ Electrodes should be placed in the crossing point of two
current
❖ Suitable frequency should be given
❖ Select spectrum mode rectangulars, triangular and trapezoidal.
❖ Increase the power gentally
❖ In both channels current should be balance
❖ If there is difference , It should be equalize by balance control
❖ After treatment , intensity controll to minimum
❖ Switch off the mains and disconnected the electrodes
❑ Interferencial current does not produced any nerve irritation
❑ No burning sensations on the skin
❑ Most suitable for treating deeper layers of tissues for example
in muscle, tendon, nerve, bursae and periosteum
❑ Skin resistance is mininum
❑ For relief of pain
❑ Muscle Stimulation
Physiological effects of IFT depends on
a. Magnitude of current
b. Type of mode used (Rhythmic or constant)
c. Frequency Range
d. Accuracy of electrode positioning
 Relief of pain :
Increase in local blood circulation due to local
pumping effect of stimulated muscle. Short duration pulses at
the frequency of 100Hz may stimulate large diameter of nerve
fibers which will have effect on pain gate in the posterior horn
and inhibit the transmission of nociceptive receptors
 Motor Stimulation :
Normally innervated muscles can contract
if frequencies between 1Hz and 100Hz are used. At low
frequencies, twitch is produced between 5Hz and 20 Hz are
partial tetany and from 30 to 100Hz a tetanic like –contraction.
e.g pelvic floor muscles.
Frequency is accelerated
from 1-10Hz and rhythmical pumping action is produced by
muscle contraction . It can affect the diameter of blood vessels ,
these factors will help absorb exudates and reduce swelling.
