RESEARCH PLAN

RATIONALE
Access to clean water is a significant issue in the Philippines, particularly in rural
areas where water sources are limited, and water treatment facilities are inadequate.
Rainwater harvesting has been identified as a potential solution to this problem, but collected
rainwater often contains impurities that make it unsuitable for consumption. The use of
natural water purifiers is a cost-effective and sustainable solution to address this issue. Okra,
a plant commonly grown in tropical and subtropical regions, has been found to have high
absorption capacity and is a potential natural purifier for rainwater harvesting. Okra stem are
generally considered as a waste and usually thrown away, but infact it has important benefit
to clean rainwater. Mucilage is present in some part of the of vegetable such as stem, leaf,
and vegetable. Itself okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) stem, when extracted can produce
mucilage that have been used in the removal of pollutants. And suspended solid such ar soil,
biological solid, decaying matters and particles discharged that can be found in rainwater The
importance of this research. Is to see if okra stem can be an alternative water purifier to
reduce diseases coming from dirty contaminated rainwater such ar cholera, diarrhea,
dysentry, and Hepatitis A that expose individual to health risk. The impact would have an
society and every individuals is a healthy and safe environment.

RESEARCH QUESTION OR PROBLEM

1.What are the pollutants in rainwater?

2.What is the shelf life of the extracted stem?
3.How is the okra (A. esculentus) effective as a rainwater purifier?

GOALS/EXPECTED OUTCOME/HYPOTHESIS
1. To determine the potential of okra (a. esculentus) stem as water purifier in
rainwater
2. To determine the potential of okra (A. esculentus) stem in removing pollutants from
rainwater and making it safe for using.
3. To find the notable of okra (A. esculentus) stem as an alternative rainwater purifier.
HYPOTHESIS
H0: If the okra (A. esculentus) stem does not have a potential in reducing pollutant and
purifying rainwater then it cannot be an effective rainwater purifier.
H1: If the okra (A. esculentus) stem does not have a potential in reducing pollutant and
purifying rainwater then it can be an effective rainwater purifier.

PROCEDURES
1. Collection of okra (A. esculentus)
2. Collection of stems
3. Stem extraction (decoction)
4. Separation of the mucilage from other components of the okra (A.esculentus)
5. Experimentation
6. Data Collection
7. Data Analysis
8. Evaluation
9. Conclusion
10. Result and Discussion

RISK AND SAFETY

Risk
The risk of doing the study is that it can cause chemical burn, eye injuries, and cut
from glassware or knife.

Safety
 Wear PPE and Proper Lab Attire
 Avoid skin contact with chemicals
 Use proper storage containers
 Stay focused and stay aware of your surroundings
 Participate in safety exercise

DATA ANALYSIS

Data will be gathered by extracting the okra (A. esculentus) stem and the okra (A.
esculentus) will then release mucilage. The mucilage of the okra (A. esculentus) will be used
as an alternative rainwater purifier. The statistical treatment for rainwater purification will be
multiple correlation.
