What is a communicative approach?

The communicative approach is based on the idea that learning
language successfully comes through having to communicate
real meaning.

Communicative approach to teaching

grammar
The communicative approach to teaching grammar
encourages learners to reflect on their own language use,
and to become more aware of the grammar and vocabulary
they are using in different situations. This helps learners to
develop a deeper understanding of the language, and to
become more confident and independent language users.

Basic principles for teachers

Facilitator and monitor

Activities have purpose and relevance to real life situation.
Topic and theme based with the target grammar hidden in
the context.
Emphasis on engaging learners in more useful and
authentic language

Goals
 The goals of communicative teaching grammar are
centered around developing learners' communicative
competence, which involves not only grammatical accuracy
but also the ability to use language effectively in real-life
communication situations. Here are some specific goals of
communicative teaching grammar:
 Accuracy
 Fluency
 Appropriacy
 Intelligibility
 Autonomy

• Accuracy
refers to the ability to use grammar structures correctly in
communication. In communicative based grammar learning,
accuracy is important because learners need to use grammar
structures correctly to be able to communicate effectively.

• Fluency
refers to the ability to use grammar structures quickly and
smoothly without hesitations or pauses. Fluency is important in
communicative based grammar learning because learners need
to be able to use grammar structures quickly and efficiently to
be able to communicate effectively.

• Appropriacy
refers to the ability to use grammar structures in a way that is
appropriate for the situation and the audience. In communicative
based grammar learning, appropriacy is important because
learners need to be able to use grammar structures in a way that
is appropriate for different communication situations and
different audiences.
• Intelligibility
refers to the ability to be understood by others. In
communicative based grammar learning, intelligibility is
important because learners need to be able to use grammar
structures clearly and understandable to their audience.

• Autonomy
refers to the ability to take control of one's own learning. In
communicative based grammar learning, autonomy is important
because learners need to be able to take an active role in their
own learning by seeking out opportunities to practice using
grammar structures and receiving feedback on their
performance.
TEACHING TECHNIQUES AND
ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT
COMMUNICATIVE BASED GRAMMAR
LEARNING

• Role-plays

• Collaborative Writing
• Information Gap Activities

• Dialogue completion

• Task based learning.

• Multimedia Activities
• Error correction
• Grammar game
• Listening and speaking activities
• Storytelling
Role-Plays:
Role-plays are a fun way to practice communication skills
and use grammar structures in context. For example, students
can be asked to perform a role-play in which they use
conditional sentences to persuade someone to do something.

• Collaborative Writing
Collaborative writing is a great way to teach grammar
structures and to encourage learners to work together to
create meaning. Learners can work together to write a
story or a dialogue that requires the use of specific
grammar structures.

• Information Gap Activities:

Information gap activities require learners to communicate

with each other to exchange information. These activities
can be used to teach a range of grammar structures in a
communicative way. This activity involves giving children
sentences with mistakes and asking them to identify and correct
the mistakes. For example, giving a sentence with a subject-verb
agreement error and asking the children to correct it.

• Dialogue Completion:
This activity involves giving students an incomplete dialogue
and asking them to complete it using appropriate grammar
structures. For example, giving students a dialogue with missing
prepositions, and asking them to complete the dialogue using the
correct prepositions.

• Task-Based Learning:
This technique involves giving students a task or a problem to
solve that requires the use of grammar structures. For
example, giving students a task to plan a trip and
communicate it with their classmates using past tenses.
• Storytelling
Storytelling is a great way to teach grammar in context.
Students can be asked to create a story using specific
grammar structures, and then share their stories with the
class. For example, asking students to create a story using
the past continuous tense. Stories can be used to introduce
and reinforce grammar structures, as well as to provide
opportunities for learners to practice using the language in a
meaningful way.
• Error Correction:
This technique involves providing students with sentences that
contain errors and asking them to correct the errors. For
example, giving students a sentence with a subject-verb
agreement error and asking them to correct it.

• Grammar Games:

Grammar games are a fun way to practice grammar structures.

For example, students can play a game in which they have to
form sentences using a specific grammar structure.

• Listening and Speaking Activities:

These activities involve listening to or watching authentic
language material, such as videos or podcasts, and then
discussing and analyzing the grammar structures used. For
example, students can listen to a podcast and identify the
verb tenses used.
• Multimedia Activities:
Using multimedia such as videos, songs, and podcasts can
be an engaging and effective way to reinforce
grammar structures and vocabulary.
• Focus on real communication!
• Learner-centered
• Contextualized learning
• Active participation

Disadvantages
• Limited focus on grammar
• Time-consuming
• Lack of accuracy
• Limited feedback

Conclusion
These teaching techniques and activities can be
effective in supporting communicative-based
grammar learning. By using these methods, teachers
can help learners to practice using grammar structures
in context, develop their communication skills, and
have fun while learning.
