What I Need to Know
You can say that you understood the lesson in this module if you can
already:
1. explain the basic concepts, uses, and importance of statistics,
2. pose questions and problems that may be answered using
statistics, and
3. formulate simple statistical instruments.

BASIC CONCEPTS IN STATISTICS
What’s In
CIS Community Pantry
Consider this graph of items available at CIS
Community Pantry for distribution (per pack)
• Which items have more supply?
• How many percent is allotted for eggs?
• Which items have the same number of
percentage in supplies?
• Which item comes next after canned
goods and vegetables?
What’s New
What can you say about the given information? Describe the content of
the table.

What is It
• Medical Field
How can the government convince people to be vaccinated by anti-
Covid19 vaccines?
Statistics is behind every medical study or research. Declaration of
efficacy of various CoVid19 vaccines must be presented to the people.
• Business/Stock Market
How will you monitor your shares of stocks in business?
Data analysts usually use statistical analysis and computer models to
determine what is likely to happen in the market or in the economy.
• Weather Forecasts
How to predict the weather in a day?
Weather predictions were based on monitoring and comparing the prior
weather conditions.
• Quality Assurance
How do companies maintain the best quality of their product?
Many companies used statistics to test the sample randomly taken from
a population to test the product’s quality. If it passes the quality standard,
then the company assumes that all the items made in the group are good
enough.

COMMON TERMS IN STATISTICS
Qualitative data
This refers to the data that describes the given information such
as marital status (single or married), age (youth, adult or senior citizen),
height (tall or short), size of a family (big family or small family), religion,
nationality, etc.
Quantitative data
Examples
1. Number of motor vehicle accident in the intersection of Gil Fernando
Ave. Marikina City and Marcos highway
2. Number of students in certain online class

Variable
It refers to the characteristics of the individual to be measured or
observed. In a cheerleading troupe with male and female dancers,
gender is a variable.
Classification of variables:
Sampling Techniques:
Random Sampling is a method by which every element of a population has
a chance of being included in a sample.
1. Nominal Data
This data refers to qualities with no rank or numerical values.
Examples: nationality, gender, occupation, marital status
2. Interval Data
This data refers to the values that can be ranked and the
differences between them are meaningful.
Examples: temperature, height, weight
3. Ordinal Data
This refers to the data that can be arranged in some order, but
the differences between the data values are meaningless.
Examples: ranking, letter grades, verbal rating, performance rating
4. Ratio Data
This refers to the data that is similar to interval data, except there
is true zero as starting point.
Examples: distance, length, time, weight

Ways in collecting data:
1. Direct Observation
Example: Counting the vehicles passing through Tumana Bridge
between 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
2. Survey
Example: Asking 80 people (sample) their preferred vaccine.
Statistical Instrument: Checklist
Preferred Vaccine
