THE DEADLY NIGHT

By: Areeba, Hiba, Omama
It was a cold, dark, winter night. The 5th Avenue street was
desolate and empty. Black clouds covered the sky-not a star to be
seen. The leaves of trees rustled gently in the freezing, cold breeze
creating a spooky sound. The streetlights had stopped working
due to the thunderstorm ravaging the trees and houses. Only a
lone street lamp cast a dim, yellow light on the sad features of the
double-storey house.
Emily and her sister Zoe were all alone in that house. Their
parents had to go out of city mostly due to the nature of their job.
Since Zoe’s childhood Emily had loved her the most and sincerely
looked after her whenever the need arose.
Emily, an 18 years old girl with blue flashing eyes and brown long
hair, was reading a thrilling novel sitting on a rocking chair in her
room. Being elder sister, she was very mature and responsible.
Zoe, a 13 years old lively and carefree girl, was enjoying a movie
with caramel popcorns sitting on the couch in a warm cozy blanket
in the TV lounge. Her beautiful grey eyes were focused on the TV.
Zoe went to the kitchen to make coffee for herself.
As she stepped out of the kitchen, she heard footsteps from first
floor and suddenly with a flash of lightening, a shadow could be
seen through the stairs. She got terrified and the coffee mug
spilled out of her hand. She started screaming relentlessly.
Hearing her screams, Emily approached her. She tried to calm her
down that it must be a cat. Then suddenly a bang caught their
attention. And now they were convinced that there must be
somebody upstairs. They mustered up their courage and started
heading towards upstairs slowly. Emily picked up a vase for their
defense. Zoe was trembling with fear and was unable to walk
further.
They saw muddy footsteps from terrace heading towards the
corner room. Emily’s heart skipped a beat as soon as she took a
step forward towards the room. As Emily entered the room, she
saw a man whose leg was injured and his clothes were stained
with blood. Seeing the very sight of him, she got terrified.
As his fathomless, black eyes accompanied by the scar that ran
across his left brow made him look dangerous and unpredictable.
Zoe was rooted in her place. Her heart was pounding. He was a
criminal who had escaped from prison and police was chasing him.
During his escape, he got shot in the leg. To save himself, he
dashed into their house.
As he rushed towards them, Emily tried to attack him with the
vase but in vain as he pulled Zoe towards him and took out his
pocket knife. He put the knife on her throat and threatened Emily.
Emily started crying for help but due to thunder no one could hear
them. The man said “I will spare you if you give me first aid.” Emily
had to agree. They went to the living room downstairs to get first
aid box.
Ding! It was this moment when the doorbell rang. The criminal
thought that it might be police and may enter the house if they
find the house suspicious. He sent Emily to act as nothing
happened on the condition of Zoe’s life. When Emily opened the
door, it was their neighbor Kevin who had brought novels that
Emily had asked him to bring as she had deep interest in thrilling
novels. Emily acted normal for the sake of Zoe’s life but she had
cleverly dropped a novel and whispered “danger” in Kevin’s ear.
Kevin understood the cue and called the police.
As Kevin left, she shut the door. She took out some cotton to clean
the blood around the wound. The man released Zoe and tried to
take out the bullet from the wound. Zoe was constantly weeping.
Emily tried to console Zoe. At once they heard the banging of the
main gate and the sirens of police cars. Emily rushed towards the
main gate. Seeing this, that man got panic and he grasped Zoe. As
soon as he raised his knife to attack her, Zoeeeeeeeee! (Emily
screamed…)
Suddenly Emily woke up in cold sweat, her heart was frantically
beating against its cage of ribs. She looked pale. She realized that
it was just a nightmare and she had slept while reading. After
coming to her senses, she stepped out of the room to check Zoe.
She was still watching the movie and seeing this, Emily caught a
sigh of relief. It was just this moment then at once they heard the
clang of someone on the terrace…
