Use of BLM Hashtags in Promoting Action and Building Communities Within Australia
Social media has played a vital role within the realm of activism since its invention.
Hashtags have allowed activists to communicate with mass audiences world wide with
similar interests. All information regarding planning and coordination events as well as
spreading awareness and sharing ideas and stories can all be found under each movements
hashtags (E.g. #BLM, #MeToo) (Allsop, 2016). The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement
has been using hashtags to fight for racial equality and against police brutality since it was
established in 2013 (Black Lives Matter, 2022). In Australia the BLM movement fights for
equality between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians. They fight for their
culture and history to be respected as well as themselves and are more commonly referred to
as Aboriginal Rights Activists (Ebony Stansfield, 2021). This research will uncover how
BLM activists use hashtags like #BLM to promote action and build communities within
Australia. A selection of the most prominent BLM/Aboriginal Rights activists from around
Australia will be interview to uncover the thinking behind their use of the BLM hashtags.
Whether it is a ‘one size fits all’ approach or each activist having a unique way of using it
will be uncovered.
