COURSE TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING

COURSE NUMBER: ENG 203

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS: 45

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is intended to give students some knowledge


about the main elements of the different genres of literature and to develop their writing
skills. It is also designed to stimulate the critical faculties of students and to contribute to
their intellectual and moral development.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1. understand the creative writer and creative writing in society;


2. develop a love for Literature;
3. increase their appreciation for Grenadian and Caribbean writers;
4. build their self esteem for writing and going public;
5. increase their awareness of the elements of the different genres of literature;
6. increase their awareness of the techniques used by writers to develop their
writing;
7. To compile a collection of their work at the end of the course.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

1. Write good descriptive pieces of writing, independently or as part of their stories;


2. Identify and create poems of different genres;
3. Write stories of high quality;
4. Write dialogues and short dramatic works;
5. Apply the grammar and punctuation skills necessary for editing their own work;
6. Confidently present their work to an audience;
7. Create and present a short literary piece.
CONTENT:

1. Discussion of the importance of descriptive writing and writers in society;


2. The pleasure of writing;
3. Descriptive writing-scenery, personal appearance, character, cultural and social
events;
4. Elements of a short story- introduction, plot, setting, characters/characterization,
conflict-suspense-climax, denouement, ending;
5. Writing short stories;
6. Types of poetry: limerick, sonnet, haiku
7. Elements of poetry: rhyme, rhythm, poetic language;
8. Elements of drama: dialogue, characters, plot, conflict-suspense, climax, stage
directions;
9. Writing dialogue and short plays;
10. The feature report
11. Introducing students to the works of Caribbean writers;
12. Elements of Punctuation and grammar.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

Lectures, discussions, sharing, presenting and critiquing

ASSESSMENT:

Class assignments- 20%

End of course test- 20%

Portfolio- 60%
