Direction: Solve the following using the GRESA (Given, Required, Equation, Solution,
Answer) format. (100 points)
1. The angular velocity of a motor is increased from 3,000 rad/min. to 4,000 rad/min
in 12 seconds. (a) If the angular acceleration is constant, find its magnitude and (b)
the total number of radians by the motor during this time. (20 points)

2. A wheel of radius 1 m starts from rest and is given an angular acceleration of 5

rad/s2. (a) Find aT of a point at its rim and (b) calculate the ac of the point after 4
seconds. (20 points)

3. The Earth has a mass of 5.97 × 1024 kg, and the Moon has a mass of 7.36 × 1022 kg.
The Moon orbits the Earth at a distance of 384,000 km; that is, the center of the
Moon is a distance of 384,000 km from the center of the Earth, as shown below. How
far from the center of the Earth is the center of mass of the Earth-Moon system? (10
points)

4. A uniform disk with a mask of 0.45 kg and a diameter of 0.25 m, accelerates from
rest to a speed of 6.28 rad/s in 5.0 s. Find the magnitude of the (a) angular
acceleration, and (b) applied torque. (20 points)

5. Assume that the Earth is a solid sphere of constant density, with mass 5.98 × 1024 kg
and radius 6370 km. (a) What is the moment of Inertia of the Earth with respect to
rotation about its axis, and (b) what is the kinetic energy of this rotation? (20
points)

6. Conceptual Question: Explain why a long pole is more beneficial to a tightrope

walker if the pole droops (in the principle of rotational motion). (5 points)

7. Conceptual Question: Which will roll down an incline faster: a can of water or a can
of ice? Discuss and explain. (5 points)
