FOSSIL RECORD
what is a fossil?
A fossil is any preserved remains,
impression, or trace of any once-living
thing from a past geological age.
Examples include bones, shells,
exoskeletons, stone imprints of animals
or microbes, objects preserved in amber,
hair, petrified wood and DNA remnants.
The totality of fossils is known as the
fossil record.
The fossil record helps paleontologists, archaeologists,
and geologists place important events and species in the
appropriate geologic era. It is based on the Law of
Superposition which states that in undisturbed rock
sequences the bottom layers are older than the top layers.

The progressive changes observed within an animal group

are used to describe the evolution of that group. In
general, but not always, successive generations tend to
change morphologically in a particular direction (e.g., the
progressive acquisition or loss of specific features), and
these changes are often interpreted as better adaptation
(through preferential selection of beneficial mutations)
to a particular environment.

Trilobite - Trilobites are a group of
extinct marine arthropods that first
appeared around 521 million years ago,
shortly after the beginning of the
Cambrian period, living through the
majority of the Palaeozoic Era, for nearly
300 million years. They are an
invertebrate that lived in a shallow
marine environment.

Crinoid stem - crinoid looks like plant but are
actually animals related to our modern day
starfish. Crinoids thrived during the
Paleozoic Era (490 through 250 million years
ago) and reached their apex during the
Mississippian Period (360 through 320
million years ago). For millions of years,
crinoids covered the ocean floor. Thousands of
species of crinoids evolved and became
extinct through geologic time.

Dinosaur bone - Dinosaurs are a diverse
group of reptiles of the clade Dinosauria.
They first appeared during the Jurassic
period under mesozoic era, between 245
and 233.23 million years ago, the 'Age of
Dinosaurs' (the Mesozoic Era) included
three consecutive geologic time periods
(the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous
Periods).

Vascular plant - The earliest known
vascular plants come from the
Silurian period. Cooksonia is often
regarded as the earliest known fossil
of a vascular land plant, and dates
from just 425 million years ago in the
late Early Silurian.
