Sight Words vs. High Frequency Words
A sight word is a high-frequency word that
does not follow the rules of spelling or
syllables. These are not decodable.

Ex. the, of, you, are, does, come

 Sight words have to be memorized
Sound words can be taught and can be explained as:
" If a child memorizes ten words, then the child can read ten words.
But, if the child can learn the sounds of ten letters, the can read...

Word Recognition work

Reading Make a list of all words (words to know) and Spelling

words (sound words) from the first period to the

third period (elementary have both words,

Divide into 6 groups. Each group will
create a poster of one sign, and explain or
present to the class. Posters will have to
be displayed in the classroom.
Students should then practice to look for
these signs in a text that you will assign.
Elementary: Look up strategies to decode, segment,
blend words. In the next slide you can find a sound
map. During the 2 hours of Social Studies, the
classes should transform into a vocabulary
workshop with lots of fun and hands-on activities.
Preschool: Organize reteaching focused on Word
Recognition work.
 The list needs to also be shared with students as
there will be a Spelling Bee competition on May 3rd.

Please encourage students from early on to study

the words.
