By the end of the lesson learners should know and be able to solve problems in contexts involving
whole numbers, including financial contexts.
1. A group of8 children have been given 12sweets each. How many sweets altogether?
2. Three friends are having a party, and each of them contributes R 35 to buy food. How
much is their total contribution?
3. A rich company donates 15 bags of toys to your school. If there are 6 toys in each bag,
what is the total number of toys that are donated to the school by the company?
Solution:
The activity needs to be written in mathematical language, i.e.
10 x 34
Here it is important for the teacher to ensure that learners understand the
difference between 34 x 10 and 10 x 3 4, even though they have the same
answer.
10 x 34=34 x 10=340
(In the activity we are talking about 34 groups of 10, which is different from
10 groups of 34 )
e.g. - if the doctor prescribes 2tablets three times a day, you end up
drinking 6 tablet in one day.
- This is different from taking 3tablets two times a day, as you shall
have taken an overdose, which will create problems for you.
Example 2:
Learners sell sweets during market day. They put 12 sweets in a packet. How -work in
many sweets will they need to fill 15 packets? groups to

Since there are 12 sweets in each packet, and there are 15 packets, it implies different
that there15 groups of 12 activities

finding the answer)
The first point would be to interpret the word problem into mathematics, so
learners can solve the problem in different ways, including repeated addition
or inspection.
12 x 15=12 x 3 x 5
¿ 36 x 5
¿(30+ 6) x 5
¿(30 x 5)+(6 x 5)
¿ 150+30
¿ 180
