The Educative Process

5 March 2023

When I asked my teacher how difficult it was to align the curriculum with the standards,

she said that it was not as difficult as it might seem. Since her full time position is a school nurse,

she receives a guide from her school district on what they want her to teach in her handwashing

and sexual reproduction lessons. The guide tells her exactly what and how she should be

teaching in order to conform to standards without altering the curriculum. She did say that one

main thing she always adds into her lessons is ensuring that students actually understand each

word she is saying. She says that most of the time it can be easy for adults to forget that the

students do not know words that we might see as common. One way she works around this is by

asking the students what they know about the information before she begins to teach. This lets

her gauge the age groups understanding of the different concepts and which topics she needs to

spend more time on. My original teacher I interviewed did not give any assessments, so I asked

another teacher and they said that the first thing they do to address poor testing is recommend

tutoring. Tutoring can offer the students a number of benefits including how to read efficiently,

how to strategize multiple choice questions, and how to stay focused throughout the whole test.

She also said a common problem that she has is that students go to tutoring and still perform

poorly. When I asked her why she thought this happened, she quickly responds with “stress.”

Stress can be combated by suggesting that the student practices healthy stress relief methods that

they can find by talking to the school counselor or their parents.
