Indore has made history by retaining the title of “Cleanest city in India” 5

consecutive times since the beginning of Swacch Sarvekshan in 2016 till 2021
organized by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has taken several innovative steps towards
cleanliness.
To realize Hon'ble Prime Minister’s vision of “Waste-to-Wealth” and to
transform urban waste into a source of income for the city IMC has setup two
Bio-CNG plants. One plant has been setup at Choithram Vegetable Market and
the other at Kabeetkhedi Garbage Transfer Station with capacities of 20 metric
ton and 15 metric ton respectively. The bio-CNG generated from these plants is
being used to fuel public transport buses in the city.
All the wet waste generated in Indore is segregated at the source itself which
leads to a high-quality wet waste collection. This wet waste has been found to
be of extremely well suited for bio-CNG production by Environmental
Infrastructure & Service Ltd. (IEISL) New Delhi, and so a new bio-CNG plant
of 550 metric ton capacity has been setup at Devguradia Trenching Ground.
This plant will be capable of producing 17,500 kg bio-CNG and 100 tons of
high-quality city compost every day, all without producing ZERO untreated
waste.
This plant is setup on PPP model and so IEISL has invested close to ₹ 150
Crores in this project. 50% of all the bio-CNG produced in this plant will be
provided to IMC at a ₹5/kg discount on market rate for fueling public transport
in Indore. The remaining 50% bio-CNG will be available to IEISL for sale to
various industries.
Not only has the IMC not incurred any financial burden in realizing this project,
the company that established the plant shall pay IMC a sum of ₹ 2,52,50,000/-
per annum as a premium for the next 20 years. By setting up this plant not only
will the IMC gain financially, but by providing cheaper and more
environmentally fuel Indore’s public transport will be made more sustainable.
Not to mention that through this project IMC shall earn carbon credits as well.
