Elk Grove Unified School District is the school district in which I am currently
employed as a teacher. The Healthy And Safe School Environment
policy is the one that I would like to focus on. Since I started teaching at the
beginning of this school year, I feel as though I have gained a lot of knowledge
regarding the needs of each of my students. Students typically begin to develop
a sense of who they are and their identity during these periods of adolescence
as they get ready for adulthood. Some of my students report that they feel
unwelcome/unsafe at school, which has a negative influence on their ability to
learn. They find it difficult to interact with all of their fellow peers as they feel
they are in the minority for social trends and beliefs. Because of this, they
become overwhelmed with what their peers think of them and succumb to
social anxiety.
There are unfortunate events that have happened at Pleasant Grove high
School regarding bullying. There have been at least two incidents this year
where a student felt unwelcome / unsafe. One incident happened in an
agricultural class where an African American student was told to “pick up” a
cotton plant from two of her classmates (both caucasian). Another incident
involved a multicultural rally performance from our GSA (Gender Sexuality
these students involved in GSA.
There is a law that exists related to this: California Education Code
Section 48900.

Social, Emotional, and Psychological Well-Being
The Board recognizes that a safe, positive school environment is also conducive
to students’ physical and mental health and thus prohibits bullying and
harassment of all students, including bullying on the basis of weight or health
condition. District staff and school volunteers will support practices and build
relationships that promote and will ensure that children are learning in an
intellectually challenging environment, are physically and emotionally safe, and
in which students are engaged in their learning and are connected to the school
and broader community.

Pleasant Grove High School has communicated with students as well as parents
in regards to these incidents. Disciplinary actions have been taking place
towards these students who’ve engaged in the bullying/harassments.

Yes, Pleasant Grove High School has a PBIS. Our school implements lessons in
our advocacy classes every Monday. These lessons may inform students about
acceptable behaviors, events, as well as recognition of students’ success. At
PGHS, we have what is known as the four B’s: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be
Respectful, and Be Your Best. These four Bs are stated every day at the
beginning of 2nd period during the announcements. This addresses the issue at

my school because it reiterates behaviors, informs students of expectations,
recognizes students, and encourages students to be at their best. At Pleasant
Grove High School, we have a banner in our quad that states, “If you can be
anything in the world, Be Kind.”
Yes, as stated before, our school has an advocacy class every Monday. In these
classes, students are grouped by their grade. Depending on their grade, usually
lessons will be altered in terms of adding information. For example, there was a
lesson about bullying and an end activity for seniors to select Ball King and
Queen. All advocacy classes will go over the lesson about bullying, however all
underclassmen will not vote since this does not apply to them.
There was also an assembly that addressed bullying. During all PE periods, there
was an assembly that addressed types of bullying, as well as ways to identify
them, strategies to prevent bullying, and what students can do if they witness or
are a victim.
PGHS has a system, Catapult EMS, in which students can anonymously report
incidents. This is a safe way for students because they do not need to include
information about themselves. Once the information is sent, it will go to the
administration who will then handle the investigation.
When it comes to disciplinary actions, it depends on the context. There is a chart
that our school follows per incident. For example, if a student is caught bullying,
they will have a conference with the VP and parent/guardian. Depending on the
context, there may be a restorative practice. Other involvements may include
suspension, referral to school counselor, school psychologist, social work, child
welfare attendance personnel, or other school support personnel for case
management and counseling.
