“Reflection of Truth”

I. Introduction
“Romeo and Juliet” is a story written by one of the most known and
remarkable poets in the history of literature, William Shakespeare. The story
mainly revolves around the two lad and lass, Romeo Montague and Juliet
Capulet, whose love is said to be forbidden due to the fact that they come
from feuding families. Over the years, their families had been at war, and have
affected the society of the city of Verona.

Thesis Statement
For some people, the roots of the tragic love story only affected the
developing relationship and somehow set a standard of love—completely
overlooking the arising issues in the story. “Romeo and Juliet” perfectly
depicts today’s reality and how history affects the future, even those
generations that are yet to come.

II. Body
1. First Point – Sexualization and objectification of women
a.) “Since the beginning of history, women were often pictured as
pawns who rank lower than of men in society—generally
stereotyped as “housewives”, “pea-brained”, toys, etc.”
b.) Mercutio has made heinous remarks towards the Nurse and
Rosaline during Act II, Scenes III and IV.
c.) Throughout history, women were taken away the right to dignity. In
many countries, women have limited rights both in the past and at
present.

2. Second Point – The connection of family feud, injustice, and unruly

killings
a.) “The whole story did not only focus on the two’s romance but the
ongoing blood-feud between the Capulet’s and Montague’s as well
which, if given a thought, was the root of all problems. Because of
this, social destruction, multiple deaths, and vendetta have taken place. ”
b.) Due to their differences, Romeo and Juliet were forbidden neither
the chance of real love nor the freedom to express such feelings
causing several conflicts and difficulties all throughout the play.
c.) Feuds often lead to misunderstandings and disagreement; just like
in the story, it is common to find problems where disagreement as
the root and likely results to social destruction.
d.) Mercutio and Tybalt’s deaths are the perfect examples of the
mentioned aftermath of the family feud.
e.) “This concept can be best compared to business and politics-related
conflicts which are most especially common in the Philippines; the
disagreement between two powerful groups can create chaos and
inconvenience even for normal citizens.”
