PART A - MICROPROJECT PROPOSAL

Brief introduction -

Integral to process control in many industries, level measurement sensors fall in to two main
types. Points level measurement sensors are used to mark a single discrete liquid height- a
preset level condition. Generally, this type of sensor functions as a high alarm, signalling an
overfills condition, or as a marker for a low alarm condition. Continuous level monitoring of
an entire system. They measure fluid level whithin a range, rather than at a one point,
producing an analog output that directly correlates to the level in the vessel.

As almost all industries, vast quantities of liquid such as water, solvents , chemical ,ect . are
used in number of processes. Liquid level measurement are widely employed to monitor as
well as measure quantitatively the liquid content in the tank , containers , vessels, reservoirs
or liquid columns. The liquid level affects both pressure and rate of flow in and out of the
container and therefore it's measurements/ control become important .

Indende Course Outcome -

1. Maintain the different types of level measurement.

Aim of the Microproject -

1. To study in detail about the liquid level measurement.

2. To study in detail about the types of liquid level measurement.

Literature Review -

Level and it's unit -

Definition -

level is defined as regulations of the linear vertical distance between the surface of a
liquid with some reference point.

Unit -

1. as level is basically related to hight of the tank or container it is measured in cm or meter

or feet or inches. eg petrol level in underground tank located at petrol pump.

2. Some time it may be measured in volumetric level or in percentage (%) . Example. Fuel
level in fuel tank of automobile.

Classification of level measurement method -

Following is the detail classification of liquid level measurement.

A. Direct method -

1. Hook type 2. Sight glass type .

3. Float type 4. Dip type

Part B - Microproject Report

Rationale -

In industry, engineering diploma holder ( also called technologiests) are expected to handle
basic instruments for the measurement of various process parameters such as temperature,
pressure, flow and level in different types of industries. The technologiests should be able to
select proper instruments for the measurement of above parameters and also maintain these
instruments for proper functioning in different applications. This course has been there fore
designed to develop this competency and related outcome.

Indende Course addressed -

1 . Maintain the different types of level measurement.

Aim of the Microproject -

1. To study in detail about the liquid level measurement.

2. To study in detail about the types of liquid level measuremen.

Procedure /construction -

Construction of the electical type measurement

Construction and working -

The above figure indicate the construction of the capacitance level measurement of electrical
type. It consists of two probes firmly fixed parallel to each other and acts as plates of
capacitor. This system is used for non - conducting liquid which acts as an dielectric material.

A capacitance measuring instruments is connected to the probes to measure the capacitance

and it is calibrated in terms of liquid level in the tank .

When the liquid level in the tank increases, the capacitance also increase and when the liquid
level decrease the capacitance decrease.

This value of capacitance is measured by capacitance measurement instruments and

displayed on the indicated calibrated in terms of liquid level.

4 . Actual Resources used -

Serial number. Resources name Quality
1. Liquid -
2. Tank -
3. Metal electrode -
4. Lead shielding -
5. Microwave radar source -
6. Measuring unit -

Literature Review -

Principle of working -

The capacitance level detector on the equation of parallel plate capacitor. I .e

C = є A/ d

Where,

C - capacitance value in farad

є - dielectric constant

d - distance between two plates in m

A - common areas of plates in m2

If A and d are constant then capacitance is directly proportional to dielectric to dielectric

constant i.e

C directly proportional to the dielectric constant.

This principle is use in the capacitive level gauge for detecting level change.
Advantages of capacitance level detector -

1. Suitable for small system.

2. Sensitivity is very high.

3. Continuous measurement and control is possible.

4. These are no moving parts.

5. It is good for use with slurries.

Disadvantages of capacitance level detector -

1. It is severaly affected by Dirt and other contaminants.

2. Suitable for fluid which prosess proper dielectric qualities.

3. It sensitivity is adversely affected by change in temperature.

Application of capacitance level detector -

1 . It is used for conductive and nonconductive with suitable capacitance method.

Output of the Microproject -

1. We learned principle of the electical type level measurement.

2. We learned construction and working.

3. We learned the application , advantage and disadvantage of the capacitance level detector.

Skills development out of this Microproject -

1. Effective communication

2. Team management

3. Time management

4. Problem solving and risk management.

5. Developed leadership qualities.

Conclusion :-

By performing this group activity of micro project of subject IME for semester fourth
in academic year 2020 - 2021.we preformed this given task on subject electical type
level measurement by using electric current successfully we conclude that,

1. We study in detail about level measurement.

2. To understand the working principle.
