LESSON 1
Quarter 4 - Week 1

Post advice to clients

After treatment you will usually feel relaxed and enjoy the benefits of the
treatment. Occasionally, you may experience a reaction from the treatment, however
these are mainly due to the toxins being released from the body, as the body is
rebalancing and cleansing itself.

 More common reactions can include:

aching/soreness of muscles
tiredness
heightened emotional state

 Less common reactions can include:

Headache
dizziness or nausea
excessive urination
increase in bowel movement
irritation
skin changes
fatigue
hyperactivity
change of appetite.

Massage and Holistic Aftercare

After any massage, spa or holistic treatment, please follow aftercare advice.

1. Try to rest and relax for the remainder of the day, if not, for a few hours
at least. Naps immediately following your therapeutic massage treatment will allow
the muscles to continue to experience the relaxing and releasing effects of the
massage.

2. You may feel relaxed and sleepy after your treatment. Rest as much as possible.

3. Keep warm as massage and relaxation treatments can make you feel more
sensitive to the cold.

4. Drink plenty of water after your treatment to rehydrate your body, reduce fatigue
and help eliminate toxins from your body. Your urine might be much darker than
usual – this is due to the toxins leaving your body.

5. Avoid alcohol and minimize tea and coffee, try to stick with water and/or herbal
teas.

6. Try to avoid eating a heavy meal, eat light for the rest of the day to allow your
body to concentrate on the natural healing and encourage detoxification.

7. Sometimes people experience some tenderness for 24 hours or so after a

massage. If you do feel a little sore, do some light gentle stretches or take a warm
bath with salts. And remember to tell your therapist about your experience so that it
can be taken into consideration in your next session.

8. If you have had a treatment with aromatherapy oils: To gain maximum benefit
from the healing oils, try to avoid washing/showering the oils off for a few hours as
they will continue to be absorbed by the skin after your treatment has ended.
9. Avoid heat and direct sunlight.

10. Immediate bathing should be avoided at least six (6) hours after the service.

11. Avoid strenuous activity for the next 12 hours, to help your body relax and de-
stress further. Light yoga, stretching and walking is acceptable.

12. Try to reduce your stress levels as this leads to body tension. This is very
important, easy to say but harder to do. Start with trying to be aware of what muscles
are engaged (tense) and ask yourself whether they need to be engaged if they are
not being used. Then try to let go of some of the tension and relax them. Example
drop your shoulders and relax your arms.

13. Remember and comply with the advices given.

❖Home advice ❖
Home care advice is very beneficial for the client, as it involves them in the
treatment and encourages them to take control of their condition. It also provides
linkage between one treatment and the next. The advice given will obviously depend
on the client‘s need and condition, e.g. the overweight client or a client with cellulite
will need dietary advice. For the tense, overworked client you may suggest that s/he
tries to reduce her/his workload, that s/he makes time to rest, takes a relaxing bath
and goes to bed early.
You may also teach relaxation techniques and advise her/him to practice
these at home. Those with poor posture can be taught corrective exercises. Deep
breathing exercises are helpful to everyone as they increase the intake of oxygen
and the elimination of carbon dioxide.

❖Diet ❖
Advice to clients

It is important that clients are made aware of the factors that are thought to
contribute to the build-up of fat and cellulite. They should be encouraged to follow a
self-help, daily regime that will increase the efficiency of the treatment.

The following home advice should be given:

A. Eat a well-balanced diet:

Include all the nutrients necessary for health such as:

- a little fat
- proteins
- carbohydrates
- vitamins
- minerals
- water and fiber
- eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (5 portions/day is recommended)
- do not overcook vegetables
- eat oily fish such as herring, trout, mackerel and salmon
- eat whole meal foods such as whole meal bread, pasta, rice, cereals, pulses,

beans, nuts and seeds

- reduce intake of saturated fat found in butter, dairy products and red meat
- reduce intake of sugar and salt
- reduce intake of alcohol – 7 to 14 units per week only
- drink around 3 liters of water per day

B. Relaxation

Relaxation means being free from tension and anxiety, which are normally
caused by the stresses of life, which upset the body balance. It is impossible to
remove all the stressors in life. A certain amount of stress is desirable as it can
produce feelings of thrill and excitement. The ability to relax is extremely important
as it combats stress and reduces harmful effects such as fatigue, lethargy, illness
and psychological problems.

Clients who live very busy lives or are coping with worries or dealing with
unhappy situations may find it very difficult to relax. Advising them and showing them
ways of reducing stress and promoting relaxation can form an important part in the
treatment. Once they have recognized the difference between the tense state and
the relaxed state they can continue to practice at home.

C. Relaxation Techniques

There are many techniques that may be used to encourage the client to relax.
They may be combined for maximum effect.

The relaxation response involves the client‘s response to a quiet soothing

environment: total concentration on a particular object while trying to let go of all
tension. This is sometimes sufficient to promote the relaxed state and can be
practiced anywhere.

Visualization or imagining involves visualizing pleasantly soothing situations

conducive to relaxation, e.g. lying on a beach, looking at a tranquil scene etc.

Progressive relaxation aims to develop an awareness of the difference between

feelings of tension and relaxation. Contraction followed by relaxation of all the
muscle groups is performed, working around the body. This is a very effective
method of promoting relaxation.

Maintaining your Results

Massages are recommended often, especially due to the fast-paced and following:

 Take a warm bath once a week – this will help to loosen up your muscles.
 Relax and distress – listen to music, burn some essential oils, etc.
 Find time to exercise (especially strength training) and stretch (yoga is excellent).
 Exfoliate and moisturize your body regularly.
 Stand up and walk around and stretch – especially if sitting a long time at a desk
and / or on the computer.
 Throughout the day, massage your shoulders, and other areas that feel stiff.
 Sit in a correct position and you might want to raise your legs.
ASSIST CLIENT SATISFACTORY RESPONSE
Client Responses

Assessing your client‘s satisfaction with all aspects of the Wellness Massage
services, you provide valuable input to guide modifications and improvement in
service delivery. The tool specifically develops for this growing sector/industry
provides some background on why it is important to collect client satisfaction
feedback. Furthermore, this tool discusses the timing, frequency, and options for
data collection. Additionally, the tool describes how to analyze and use client
satisfaction results to plan improvements in client services.

Why Conduct Client Satisfaction Assessments?

Conducting client satisfaction activities can help you to:

 Identify opportunities for service improvements;

 Identify what clients want as opposed to what you or your staff think they
want; and
 Provide feedback to service delivery staff, management, and others about
program effectiveness.

Steps in the Process

In order to carryout successful client satisfaction activities, the following steps should
be completed:

1. Decide what you want to look at and learn. Research shows there are six basic
areas of the most concern to clients.
Those areas are: Amenities; People Skills; Environment; Medical Expertise;
Affordability and Systems.

2. Choose which method you want to use to collect information from clients
about their satisfaction with your services.

3. Select who will be involved in collecting information from clients and

prepare them for that role.

4. Interpret the data you obtain from clients so you can use it to improve
services.

5. Share the results with staff and get them involved in planning
improvements.

SAMPLE CLIENT FEEDBACK FORM

My goal is to provide clients with the best possible massage experience and I
appreciate your willingness to take the time to give me honest feedback. Please rate
each of the questions on a scale of 1-5 (where 1 is poor and 5 is excellent) and
provide additional comments or suggestions in writing. Thank you .

LESSON 2
Quarter 4 - Week 2

After Care Products and Services

After care products

1. Essential oils
- are often used in aromatherapy, a form of alternative medicine that employs
plant extracts to support health and well-being.

- are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or
“essence,” of their source.

How do essential oils work?

a) are most commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy, in which they are
inhaled through various methods.

b) oils are not meant to be swallowed.

c) can interact with your body in several ways.

 when applied to your skin, some plant chemicals are absorbed.
 certain application methods can improve absorption, such as applying with heat
or to different areas of the body.
 inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system,
which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of
smell, and long-term memory
 the limbic system also plays a role in controlling several unconscious
physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
 some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on your body.

Note:
Essential oils can be inhaled or diluted and applied to the skin. They may stimulate
your sense of smell or have medicinal effects when absorbed.

Popular Types

 Peppermint: used to boost energy and aid digestion

 Lavender: used to relieve stress

 Sandalwood: used to calm nerves and help with focus

 Bergamot: used to reduce stress and improve skin conditions like eczema

 Rose: used to improve mood and reduce anxiety

 Chamomile: used to improve mood and relaxation

 Ylang-Ylang: used to treat headaches, nausea, and skin conditions

 Tea Tree: used to fight infections and boost immunity

 Jasmine: used to help with depression, childbirth, and libido

 Lemon: used to aid digestion, mood, headaches, and more

Health benefits of essential oils

 Stress and anxiety

It has been estimated that 43% of people who have stress and anxiety use some
form of alternative therapy to help relieve their symptoms.

 Headaches and migraines

Recent studies have also observed reduced headache pain after applying
peppermint and lavender oil to the skin. It has been suggested that applying a
mixture of chamomile and sesame oil to the temples may treat headaches and
migraines. This is a traditional Persian headache remedy.

 Sleep and insomnia

Smelling lavender oil has been shown to improve the sleep quality of women after
childbirth, as well as patients with heart disease

 Reducing inflammation
It has been suggested that essential oils may help fight inflammatory conditions.

How to choose the right essential oil

Keep the following tips in mind to choose only high-quality oils:

Purity: Find an oil that contains only aromatic plant compounds, without additives or
synthetic oils. Pure oils usually list the plant’s botanical name (such as Lavandula
officinalis) rather than terms like “essential oil of lavender.”

Quality: True essential oils are the ones that have been changed the least by the
extraction process. Choose a chemical-free essential oil that has been extracted
through distillation or mechanical cold pressing.

Reputation: Purchase a brand with a reputation for producing high-quality products.

2. Exfoliants
(or abrasives) are compounds able to slough away the top layer of dead
epidermis cells of the skin, thereby leaving the skin appear smoother, fresher and
less wrinkled (peelings).

the result of exfoliation is to promote blood circulation in the skin and to increase
the turnover of surface skin cells.

Exfoliation can be achieved either mechanically by scrubbing the skin with

cleansers containing small, hard particles (scrubs) or also chemically by applying
cleansers containing active ingredients with a peeling effect (e.g. alpha-hydroxy
acids, beta-hydroxy acids and others).

What chemicals should I be looking for?

There are a couple types to look out for, starting with alpha hydroxy acids. AHAs are
derived from natural substances and are ideal for exfoliating dry skin, since they
remove the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together. Gross, yes, but smoother skin
is the payout. However AHAs, because they're water soluble, can’t penetrate very
deep into pores. Unlike BHAs.

By contrast, BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) are oil-soluble molecules. Thus, they can
reach deeper into the skin and pores. BHAs also have anti-inflammatory and
antibacterial properties—a more in-depth exfoliation in general. This type of chemical
exfoliator is recommended with those with acne-prone, oily skin. If blackheads are a
concern, stick to BHAs.

3. Herbal teas and beverages

 Tea is a name given to a lot of brews, but purists consider only green tea, black
tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea the real thing.
 They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, a shrub native to China
and India, and contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most potent of
these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals that can contribute to
cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries.

 All these teas also have caffeine and theanine, which affect the brain and
seem to heighten mental alertness.

 The more processed the tea leaves, usually the less polyphenol content.
Polyphenols include flavonoids. Oolong and black teas are oxidized or
fermented, so they have lower concentrations of polyphenols than green tea; but
their antioxidizing power is still high.

Here's what some studies have found about the potential health benefits of tea:

Green tea:

 Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has
been widely studied.

 Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung,
stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries,
burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological
disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and
improve cholesterol levels.

Black tea:

 Made with fermented tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and
forms the basis for flavored teas like chai, along with some instant teas.

 Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by
exposure to cigarette smoke.

 It also may reduce the risk of stroke.

White tea:

 Uncured and unfermented. One study showed that white tea has the most potent
anticancer properties compared to more processed teas.
Oolong tea:

 In an animal study, those given antioxidants from oolong tea were found to have
lower bad cholesterol levels. One variety of oolong, Wuyi, is heavily marketed as
a weight loss supplement, but science hasn’t backed the claims.

Pu-erh tea:
 Made from fermented and aged leaves. Considered a black tea, its leaves are
pressed into cakes. One animal study showed that animals given pu-erh had
less weight gain and reduced LDL cholesterol.

Chamomile tea:

 Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision
and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells.

4. Mud Masks

 Are known to improve blood circulation under the skin, cleanse skin of dirt and
impurities, moisturize and refresh tired skin and make the skin appear brighter,
softer and clearer.

 Other than mud, some commercially-made mud masks may also contain
minerals from the Dead Sea or Volcanic regions, honey and green tea, which
have numerous benefits for the skin too.

 Cleansing, moisturizing and upkeep of the skin are not the only properties of
mud – it also serves to repair skin tissue and to improve its natural elasticity,
while making it appear younger.

5. Clay Masks

 Are the go-to product if you have oily and breakout-prone skin.

 A clay mask in fact is best for absorbing excess dirt and for drying out
excessively oily skin.

 In addition to their drying effect, clay masks tighten sagging skin, exfoliate dead
skin cells from the face and refine enlarged or inflamed pores. These properties
make clay very popular in other skincare products, such as soaps and powders.

 Clay is also high in nutrients which, when applied to your face in mask form, get
absorbed into the skin.

What’s the best option?

Mud and clay masks are similar as they both come from the earth, however
the benefits are slightly different. The main difference between the two is that mud is
a skin-healing agent, while clay is a cosmetic, drying agent. Clay masks are most
useful for someone who has oily skin and is prone to breakouts of acne and
blemishes. Mud is water-based, so the product in mask-form is more hydrating and
suitable for people with dryer, more dull skin. Ultimately, knowing your skin type and
the results you wish to achieve through a mask is of essence, but both mud and clay
based products can deliver great benefits to the skin.
Uses

Mud masks should be applied to a clean and dry face. Simply spread a thin
layer of the mud mask onto your face with your fingers and allow it to dry for 20 to 30
minutes. Rinse with warm water and a soft washcloth to remove the mud. Mud
masks should be used two to three times a week for best results.

Clay masks are similarly applied to a clean, dry face and evenly distributed in
a thin layer with fingers. Clay masks may need to dry up to 40 minutes, depending
on the thickness of the mask. Bear in mind that because clay masks are not as
gentle on the skin, they should only be used once a week to avoid over-drying.

6. Bath Soaks

a. Herbal baths are gentle and healing for the mind and body. Depending on the
selection of herbs you use a herbal bath can relax, energize or ease tense muscles.
stimulate blood flow
calm the emotions
moisturize the skin
aid digestion, and heal various other complaints.

b. Herbal salt scrubs to rejuvenate the skin.

Easy to make, requiring only a few ingredients, salt scrubs remove dead skin
cells, draw out toxins, make fine lines disappear, and give skin a youthful glow.

Aftercare Services
1. Relaxation Exercise
 can help to lower blood pressure and heart rate
 reduce oxidative stress in the body
 decrease anxiety and depression
 improve sleep
 and provide a feeling of wellness.

a. Mindful relaxation is an effective way to combat stress. With a little practice, you
can learn how to shift into a relaxation mode. When done successfully, the relaxation
response increases alpha brain wave activity and lowers blood pressure, pulse,
respiration rate, metabolic rate, oxygen consumption, anxiety, and produces a
greater sense of wellbeing.

Try these steps to help you achieve mindful relaxation:

 Commit to an uninterrupted length of time each day to do your practice.

 Choose a quiet place.
 Turn off the television, radio, computer, and telephone.
 Find a comfortable body position. You can sit or recline in a chair, or settle
comfortably on the floor. Make sure you feel supported.
 Focus on the repetition of a word, sound, prayer, or your breath flowing in and
out.
 Create a positive state of mind.

b. Try breathing techniques

Another way to master stress is to be aware of your breathing. When people

feel panicked or unconsciously stressed, they tend to take short, shallow gasps of
air.The resulting lack of oxygen restricts blood flow and causes muscles to tense. By
allowing more air to enter your body, you slow down your heart rate, lower your
blood pressure, and break the stress cycle.

 Focus your attention on your breathing. Take a few deep breaths, exhaling
slowly.
 Mentally scan your body. Notice areas that feel tense or cramped. Quietly loosen
them. Let go of as much tension as you can.
 Rotate your head in a smooth, circular motion once or twice, avoiding any
movements that cause pain.
 Roll your shoulders forward and backward several times. Let all of your muscles
completely relax.
 Recall a pleasant thought, event, or place.
 Take deep breaths and exhale slowly.

c. Use imagery

Imagery exercises use creative imagination to "picture" scenarios that relax

and heal. They can be done on your own, or with a facilitator guiding you, which is
called guided imagery.

2. Diet and Nutrition Program

 The goal of nutrition education is to reinforce specific nutrition-related practices

or behaviors to change habits that contribute to poor health;

 This is done by creating a motivation for change among people, to establish

desirable food and nutrition behavior for promotion and protection of good health.
