DUBAI INTEGRATED ENERGY STRATEGY

Mohammed AbdulAziz Najem Alawadhi

Drainage & Irrigation Expert
Dubai Municipality, UAE
The DIES2030 aims to secure a sustainable supply of energy and to enhance the efficiency of water,
power and fuel use in the Emirate. Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy DIES 2030 demand side
management is calling for 30% reduction in energy demand

DUBAI INTEGRATED ENERGY STRATEGY

DIES 2030
DUBAI DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY 2030
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is well proven technology and can be adopted to enhance any District Cooling Plant
(DCP) capacity with minimum additional footprint

The TES sustainable features

• Low hanging fruit

• Helps offset peak power demand during summer

• Mature technology
In the UAE and the
• Meets DIES 2030 demand side management requirement GCC countries
almost 65% of used
• In line with DEWA urging customers to use energy – energy is for cooling
intensive load during off peak

• Power reduction
POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERN - THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE (TES)
WHAT IS TES &
WHY IS IT USED?
A naturally stratified thermal accumulator that allows the storage of chilled water produced
during off-peak periods. A TES tank reduces the operational cost and the required capacity of
THERMAL ENERGY cooling plants, increasing the efficiency of the cooling plant and reducing the capital cost.
STORAGE TANK
It is a widely proven technology that collects excess process thermal energy to be used during
load peak hours. By producing chilled water in the evening and using it during daily peak hours
there are several advantages

The thermal energy and the required volume of useful water required is related through the
following expression:
PHYSICS
FUNDAMENTALS 3
𝐸 𝑘𝑊ℎ · 3,600 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑊ℎ
𝑉 𝑚 =
Δ𝑇 · 𝜌 · 𝑐

Where:
• 𝑉 represents the volume of useful water in 𝑚3
• Δ𝑇 is the temperature difference between return and supply water
• 𝜌 is the density of the water
• 𝑐 represents the specific heat of water
The Froude number is the ratio between the inertial

The physical significance of the Reynolds number is 𝑅𝑒 =
the ratio between inertial and viscous forces. As the 𝜗

“Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) represents the optimal technique
COMPUTATIONAL for evaluating how a TES system will perform once it is built, since it
FLUID DYNAMICS provides a real insight into the flow and temperature effects”

Very precise calculations that allow us to:

● Reduce the thermocline thickness

● Optimize Figure of Merit (F.O.M.) > 0.9

● Reduce water volume and tank size

● Increase system efficiency
