4. Module Overview:
Nowadays, English is used worldwide because it is the language of science, business and
technology. So, it is essential for every educated person to have some knowledge about this
global language. That is why Ministry of Higher Education has included Academic English
module in the curriculum of all departments in the universities of Kurdistan. The inclusion of
this course will help the students’ knowledge and skills in: reading and understanding
academic texts, listening to lectures and presentations, writing sentences, paragraphs and
different essential essay types, participating in seminars and group discussions and preparing
and giving simple presentations.
The current course is designed especially for the third semester students in all departments at
university of Zakho. It covers the basic communication skills in a pre-intermediate level:
reading, writing, speaking and listening. Speaking and listening focuses on both the receptive
and productive skills needed to be successful in an academic environment. Reading uses
extracts from authentic academic textbooks. Writing focuses on some of the most important
aspects of academic writing such as writing sentences and simple paragraphs.

Students who have a full attendance must have got enough courage and

formal environment.

They should also improve their writing and reading skills as they will be

may also get expanded.

Students will be able to converse with lecturers, present ideas, and write

9. Teaching and Learning Methods:


To achieve the main goals of the module, the lecturer will adopt different teaching and
learning methods:

1- lectures: to give an overview of each topic the teacher will present the material in
form of lectures
2- group working: the students will work in different activities related to each topic in
groups
3- oral discussions: students will be given topics to give a short presentation.
4- writing: students will be given topics to write sentences and paragraphs.

Audios: The students will do practice on the topic by listening to audios and then do exercises
on them.
