Measuring pressure drop over the charge air cooler

Engine type This bulletin concerns WÄRTSILÄ® 9L34SG, 16V34SG and 20V34SG
engines.
General The charge air cooler maintains the thermal load of the engine at correct
level. An increasing pressure drop over the charge air cooler on the “air
side” causes increased thermal load and specific fuel consumption (SFC).

By actively measuring the pressure drop ( p) over the charge air cooler, the
change in the charge air cooler condition can be evaluated and the air
cooler can be cleaned at the right time. The cleaning intervals can vary from
one installation to another due to prevailing operation conditions and quality
of inlet air.
Recommendation Wärtsilä recommends following of the p increase over the charge air
cooler on a regular basis. The charge air cooler should be inspected and
overhauled according to the maintenance schedule. In case the p increase
exceeds the high limit in tables 1 and 2, the air side of the cooler should be
cleaned earlier.
For further information, see chapter 15 in the engine instruction manual and
Operating Instruction 3415Q059: Improved sealing against blow-by in the
charge air cooler.

Measuring Wärtsilä W34SG engines can be equipped with piping and connections for
charge air cooler p measuring as illustrated below. The measuring of p
can be performed with a portable indicator, see Figure 1, that is connected
to quick couplings on the engine when measuring. The portable indicator
can be used after installing quick couplings to the piping for p measuring,
see Figure 2.

p limits The tables below list the nominal p value and high limits, depending on
engine type and design stage, for all charge air cooler types. The charge air
cooler identification number can be found on the A-bank side end cover.
