• Scotland the second largest
country in the United Kingdom
by area and population. It is
located in Western Europe and
occupies the northern third of
the British Isles.
• It is bordered by England to the
south, the Atlantic Ocean to the
west and north, and the North
Sea to the east.
• It has about 800 islands.
• Its capital, Edinburgh, is one of
the largest financial centres in
Europe. Scottish territorial
waters are tearing up a large
area of north Atlantic waters and
the North Sea, and below them
is one of the largest reserves of
crude oil in the European Union.
• The Kingdom of Scotland was an
independent state until 1 May
1707, when the Acts of Union
brought it into a political union
with the Kingdom of England,
creating a Great Britain. Scotland
remains a separate state and has
its own legislation. The Scottish
laws, the Scottish education
system and the Church of Scotland
were the three cornerstones that
ensured the survival of Scottish
culture and Scottish national
consciousness.
• Scotland occupies the northern third of
the British Isles. It covers an area of
78,772 km².
• It has a land border with England alone,
which stretches for 96 km west-east
between the Solway Firth and the Tweed
basin; it is bordered by the Atlantic
Ocean to the west and north, the North
Sea to the east and the North Channel to
the southwest to the North Sea. The
Island of Ireland is located 20 km from
the southwestern tip of Scotland, the
Kintyre Peninsula, while Norway is
located 305 km to the east and the Faroe
Islands 270 km to the north.
