CHAPTER 3: KINEMATICS

LESSON 1: MOTION
ALONG A STRAIGHT
LINE
KINEMATICS

KINEMATICS
 describes motion in terms of displacement, velocity,

and acceleration

MOTION
 change in position with respect to its surroundings
KINEMATICS

SPEED
 the distance traveled by a body in a given time

 it is a scalar quantity
𝒅
𝒗=
𝒕
where: v – speed
d – distance
t – time
KINEMATICS

VELOCITY
 the displacement of a body in a specified time
interval
 it is a vector quantity
𝒅
𝒗=
𝒕
where: v – speed
d – distance
t – time
KINEMATICS

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
Find the velocity, if the distance is 20 m North with the time of 4s.
KINEMATICS

SAMPLE PROBLEM 2
A car has a speed 30km/hr. covering the distance of 20 km.
Calculate the time.
KINEMATICS

ACCELERATION
 rate of change in velocity

 it is a vector quantity
𝒗𝒇 −𝒗𝒊
a=
𝒕
where: a – acceleration
v – velocity
t – time
KINEMATICS

 If the time is missing, this is the formula:

𝑣𝑓 −𝑣𝑖
𝑡=
𝑎
 If the final velocity is missing, this is the formula:
𝑣𝑓 = 𝑣𝑖 + 𝑎𝑡
 If the Initial velocity is missing, this is the formula:
𝑣𝑖 = 𝑣𝑓 − 𝑎𝑡
KINEMATICS

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
A car accelerates from 10 m/s to 20 m/s in 5s. Calculate the
acceleration of the car.
KINEMATICS

SAMPLE PROBLEM 2
A car accelerates from a rest at a constant rate of 2.5 m/s2 .
Calculate the final velocity of the car in 12 seconds later.
