Math 9 

Find k by multiplying x1 and y1.
Divide k and x2.
Quarter 2 Reviewer Solution 2

Variations  Substitute given to 𝑥1 𝑦1 = 𝑥2 𝑦2.

 Multiply. Divide.
Direct variation: y=kx.
Joint variation: y=kxz.
y
Constant: k = y1
x Constant: k =
x1z 1
𝑥 varies directly as 𝑦. If 𝑥 = when 𝑦 = , what is the value of 𝑦 when 𝑥
=?

Solution 1

 Substitute and divide y1 and x1 to find k.

 Multiply k and x2 to find y2.

kx
Combined variation: y =
z
x y
Constant: and , divide.
z z

Solution 2

y1 y2
 Substitute and form = .
x1 x2
 Cross multiply. Divide.

k
Inverse variation: y = .
x
Constant: k = yx.

x1 = 10, 𝑦1 = 48 𝑥2 = 32 , 𝑦2 = ?

Solution 1 Rational exponents

Examples: mix

 What is the root of the given whole number. Make the

denominator the exponent of the whole number. (What is
the cube root of 8).
 The answer raised to the given numerator. What is 2
raised to 2. = 4.

Laws of Exponents
1. Product of a power: add exponents if the whole number is
the same.

2. Power of a power: multiply exponents.

3. Power of a product: distribute exponents. Multiply the

product.

4. Quotient of a power: minus or subtract exponents.

5. Power of a quotient: divide whole numbers and distriute

exponents.

A Negative Exponent tells the number of times the reciprocal of the

base is used as a factor.
Simplifying Rational Exponents
Example 1:  (don’t add or subtract wholenumbers if their radicands are
not the same.)
2
1. 93
= (32) 2/3

= 34/3

2. 8 2/3

= (8) 3

=22

=4

Laws of Radicals
1st law - if the index and the exponent of the radicands are equal, then
its simplified form is the radicand.

2nd law -The nth root of the product of a and b is equal to the nth root
of a times the nth root of b

Multiplying

3rd law – rationalizing the denominator of the radicand.

 Multiply the numerator and denominator by a quantity that

will make the denominator a perfect nth power. Dividing
 Remove the radical sign in the denominator by simplifying
the resulting expression.

Adding and subtracting radicals:

 Group them together. Simplify.
