Single Degree of Freedom Systems - Forced Vibrations

Q. Question
No.

1 Define following terms :

i) Magnification factor.
ii) Force Transmissibility.
iii) Damping Factor.
iv) Quality Factor.

2 Explain frequency response curves with neat diagram

3 Explain the critical speed of shaft carrying single rotor

4 A machine part of mass 4 kg vibrates in a viscous fluid. Find the damping coefficient
when a harmonic exciting force of 50N results in resonant amplitude of 250 mm with a
period of 0.4 sec. If the excitation frequency is 2 Hz, find the percentage increase in the
amplitude of forced vibration when the damper is removed.

5 When a single cylinder engine of total mass 300 kg is placed on the four springs, each
spring is compressed by 2 mm. A dashpot, offering 400 N of damping force at relative
velocity of 200 mm/sec, is attached to the engine to damp out the vibrations. The
reciprocating mass of the engine is 20 kg and stroke of the piston is 130 mm. If the
engine is running at 1500 rpm find the amplitude of steady state vibrations.

6 The static deflection of an automobile on its springs is 100 mm. Find the critical speed
when the automobile is travelling on a road, which can be approximated by a sine wave
of amplitude 80 mm and a wavelength of 16 m. Assume the damping to be given by
(damping ratio : 0.05) also determine the amplitude of vibration at 75 km/hr.

7 A 75 kg machine is mounted on springs of stiffness 11.76 × 10^5 N/m with damping

factor of 0.2. A 2 kg piston within the machine has a reciprocating motion with a stroke
of 0.08m and a speed of 3000 cycles per minute. Assuming the motion of the piston to
be harmonic, determine the amplitude of vibration of the machine and the vibratory
force transmitted to the foundation.
