READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

1. List down 5 salient points of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.


 It integrated the full Bill of Rights, which guaranteed fundamental civil and political
rights.
 It provided for free, fair, and periodic elections.
 It established a representative democratic government.
 It divided among three separate and independent branches of government: the Executive,
a bicameral Legislature, and the Judiciary.
 It safeguards to limit the president’s power in terms of length of service (no re-election)
and use of martial law powers (the grounds for declaring martial law are very restricted).

2. Get one salient point for an explanation.


 It integrated the full Bill of Rights, which guaranteed fundamental civil and political
rights. In this article which is the Article III, Bill of Rights, it frames the promotion of
social justice as a commitment to create equitable opportunities, reduce social-economic
and political inequalities, and remove cultural inequities. Also, this salient point
establishes the relationship of the individual to the State and defines the rights of the
individual by limiting the lawful powers of the State. It is one of the most important
political achievements of the Filipinos.
