History of ASEAN

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an international organization of ten

Southeast Asian countries that aims to promote regional economic growth, social progress,

cultural development, peace, and security. It was founded on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok,

Thailand by the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and

Thailand who signed the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration). Later, Brunei joined in

1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999 ¹².

ASEAN's goals are to accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development

and to promote peace and security in Southeast Asia. ASEAN has achieved many milestones

since its establishment in 1967. Some of the achievements include the establishment of the

ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the ASEAN

Economic Community (AEC) .

ASEAN is composed of ten member countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao

PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam .


ASEAN plays a vital role in Southeast Asia by promoting regional cooperation and integration. It

has been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability in the region and has helped to resolve

conflicts through peaceful means
