1st Grade News

April 2023

We hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing spring break! Inshallah

our grade 1 friends are recharged to begin our last term in grade 1. It's hard
to believe we are almost nearing the end of the year. We are in the last part
of Ramadan. Let's take this time to reflect, worship and make lots of dua and
supplications. May Allah (SWT) accept all our
good deeds this month.
April also begins with the exciting season of
Spring! Don't forget to read our April Learning
section on new concepts and curriculum we will
begin for term 3. We have three days off this
month for Eid Holidays, enjoy this time with family
and friends. Eid Mubarak to our CIS families!

April Learning
Language Arts
Students will work on reading with comprehension and
continue to practice their printing skills and phonics.
They will also learn how to make connections between
texts. When reading at home please facilitate
conversation by asking your child how the book relates to
themselves. Students should now be reading 20 minutes
on a daily basis, using the RazKids program, at home.
Math
Students will be using mental math strategies to add and
subtract. They will then move into skip counting by 2’s, 5’s
and 10’s.
Science
Students will begin learning about Spring and its seasonal
changes. They will also discuss and learn about the
attributes of living things.
Social Studies
Students will learn about the different communities in
Alberta and the differences between urban, suburban
and rural communities.
Health
Students will learn about making informed choices about
safety in regards to home, school, street and community.
Art
Students will practice using a variety of skills to create
their work of art.
Gym
Students will focus on applying rules to games,
sportsmanship and participation skills.

Parent Reminders
● Ramadan - We will be having Ramadan
initiatives and fundraisers throughout the
month of Ramadan. Emails and updates will be
sent from your classroom
teacher/administration. Check emails and
ClassDojo regularly.
● Volunteers are mandatory for all field trips. If
you haven’t already done so, please get your
Police Information Check completed ASAP.
Please pick up a Police Information Check
letter from the office for a discount. Thank
you!
● Mondays! - We encourage you to send your
child everyday. Although Mondays are short,
we still have a full day of learning planned.
Illnesses are an exception - If your child is ill,
please inform the office of his/her absence.
● School Uniforms - Students are expected to
come to school in a clean and appropriate
uniform each day. This consists of a navy vest
and pants for the boys, and a navy dress and
pants for the girls. Both should have a white
shirt underneath. Please be mindful of tears
and rips in your child’s clothing. Let’s dress for
success!
● Drop Off & Pick-Up - Doors Open 7:55am.
Students should remain in their cars until
doors open. All students should be in their
classrooms no later than 8:10 am. Also, please
be on time for dismissal and wait behind the
orange tape on the ground, in the Bay Area.
This will help to make dismissal run more
smoothly.
