Student Name: Jack Hand

ID: G00393758

Subject: MTW Topic(s): Christmas Practical/Lathe Practical

Pupil Year Group: 2nd Year No. of Pupils: 26
Lesson Number: 9 Length of lesson: 60 minutes
Date: 19/01/2023 Time of Lesson: 10:00 am

1. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OSERVATIONS

Relevant Previous Knowledge: The students have covered the parts within a lathe, the machine’s
basic functionality and the specific use of tools in combination with the lathe to create features.

Relevant Previous Skills: The students have covered many particle skills and hand tool work meaning
they will have a foundation of knowledge focusing on the chisel use during wood turning.

Observations (Previous Lesson): The students are enjoying this topic and showing an interest in the
functionality of this machine and discovering how it is used to create pieces.

2. LESSON RATIONALE

Brief outline of WHY this content is the basis of the lesson- what are your reasons for KEY*
planning the lesson in this way? (Bullets or 1 para)

Today's lesson will be used to reflect on the learning in the previous lesson on woodturning
and using certain tools to achieve certain desired results when using a lathe. The students
RL
will be given the opportunity to work on finishing their Christmas practical project [candle
holder crib] however most of the class who are finished this project already will be working NL
on the lathe practising some of these skills they have studied in theory. Each student will
have roughly 5 to 7 minutes on the lathe learning to use each type of chisel available to
them to understand how these effects are achieved practically. NL

6. LESSON REFLECTION

Q. What went well in this lesson, and why? (1 para)

I think during this lesson one of the best practises was when the students were allowed to work
independently learning on their own while also under the supervision of the teacher and being
corrected on any bad practises being done. This was a great way to learn as most of the students did in
fact catch the errors as the teacher was watching and ensuring that their peers were operating the
machine safely and under the correct guidelines in the woodworking room.

Q. What did not go as well as hoped, in this lesson, and why? (1 para)

the exit from the room was quite abrupt As for some reason the belted dismissed the students went
off 4 minutes early meaning the cleanup was cut short and the students all attempted to flee rather
quickly out of the room which left a couple of students hanging back to help with the clean up which I
insisted they move on and enjoy their lunch while I proceeded with the cleanup. This cannot be the
case for when I'm a full time teacher as I would not have time to clean up the room after some of my
students made these mistakes. This will be addressed in the next lesson.

Q. What might I do to improve this lesson, were I to deliver it again? (1 para)

If I were delivered this lesson again, I would more than likely include the students doing the practical on
their Christmas projects more in the late work as some of them did not seem to encourage to complete
their work and just did not want to take turns on the lathe. This was quite disappointing to me and I
hope that these students will become more encouraged to do the work as I did not want to stop the
class today from enjoying a new hands on activity when some students did not want to partake.

Q. What did I observe today, in general terms, that I need to follow up on, next class? (e.g. student
engagement, classroom management issues, poor/unwieldy entrance and exit from the
classroom, lighting in the room, visibility of the screen from the back of the room, absenteeism,
SEN challenges, H&S, etc.). Bullet points.

MEMOS

 Entrance to the room was good and students came in well mannered and prepared to work.
 The exit from the room was all orderly and needs to be corrected in the next lesson.
 The visibility for the students around the ladies was quite good as there is a large desk/
workstation at the end of the woodworking room I was in which is great for giving
presentations to large groups of students.
