2. You are Health Secretary, Students Council Citizens Public School, Ram Bagh, Varanasi. The Council has decided
to start from the second of October a week-long cleanliness drive around the school. Draft a notice in about 50 words
asking the Class XI students to enrol for the drive.

Cleanliness Drive

The Students Council of the school has decided to start a week-long cleanliness drive
around the school from 2 October. It is in keeping with the spirit of Prime minister’s
initiative “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan”. Students of class XI are requested to enrol for the
drive as volunteers. Registration is open for two days, 28 September and 29 September,
from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Answer: The thought that her mother had grown very old and might not live long.
b) What do the ‘sprinting trees’ signify ?
Answer: The ‘sprinting trees’ signify the childhood and youth.
c) Name the poetic device used in ‘trees sprinting’.
Answer: Personification & metaphor

a) What was unusual about M Hamel’s dress on his last day in the school?
Answer: M Hamel had put on his ceremonial clothes on his last day in the school. He was wearing a
beautiful green coat, a frilled shirt, and a little black embroidered silk cap. This was a special ceremonial
attire which he usually wore on days of inspection and prize distribution.

b) What does the poem, ‘Keeping Quiet’ teach us ?


Answer: The poem ‘Keeping Quiet’, teaches us to be quiet for some time and introspect. The poet urges us
to stop all our activities, thoughtless actions, and also to stop the race of moving from one day to another. To
know ourselves and to rejuvenate ourselves, we must go inwards and introspect.

c) Do you think Saheb was happy to work at the tea stall? Answer giving reasons.
Answer: Since Saheb now works in a tea-stall, he is now bound to his master and feels burdened. The steel
canister he carries is very heavy as compared to his light plastic bag. The bag was his own and the canister
belongs to his master whose orders he now has to follow. So he is no longer his own master.
d) How does Charley describe Galesburg Illinios, 1864?
Answer: Charley thought that Galesburg was still a wonderful town with a leisurely way of life, with big
frame houses and huge lawns, tremendous trees and a peaceful and tranquil world. In that century in 1894,
people used to sit on their lawns, having sufficient time to talk to each other, smoking cigars, women waving
palm-leaf fans in very long summer evenings, overall it was a friendly place. The first world war was twenty
years away and the second world war was forty years into the future.

Q6. Attempt ANY ONE of the following questions in 100-120 words. 3 marks
A. How is Mukesh’s attitude towards his situation different from that of Saheb? Why ?
Answer: Mukesh was optimistic about a bright future unlike Saheb. Saheb lacked determination and had
simple dreams. But Mukesh had a clear dream of becoming a motor mechanic and he was very determined
to fulfill this dream. He was ready to face any hurdle that would come on his way, whereas Saheb made no
efforts to achieve the things he wanted in life.

B. Do you think that the third level was a medium of escape for Charley? Why?
Answer: Yes, Charley found the third level as a medium of escape because he was suffering from all the
modern day insecurities,war,worries and stress caused by todays work and societal culture.He had a
fascination for the past...this is visible in his attachment to the stamp album inherited from his
grandfather;so his idea of true happiness was already ingrained in his mind as a return to the past.Thus in
his mind he has always wanted to go back in time, so he found the third level as a fulfillment of his dream.
