Summary/Reflection
I conducted this Student Impact Project in my underclassman treble choir. This class

consists mostly of freshman and a few sophomore students. The topic addressed was key

signatures. I first introduced the concept through a PowerPoint in a lecture style setting, keeping

things interactive by allowing students to come up to the board and raise their hands to answer
questions. I also reviewed using various methods including games with rewards as incentive, as

well as using the repertoire and sightreading they were already using before I got there to

identify key signatures within a familiar setting. Implementing this quick review strategy has

helped them tremendously to apply their learning to all facets of learning within the choral

classroom.

As you can see, every student’s individual scores either improved or stayed stagnant.

None of the student’s grades decreased between the pre-test and post-test. With such positive

individual growth, the class average also jumped almost 20 points. Key signatures is a beast of a

musical concept, and not something everyone can learn overnight, especially at this particular

class’s age and musicianship levels. It is an ongoing journey of learning that is not over yet, but

this experience has been rewarding to know I have put them a step in the right direction towards

mastery.
