STEEL DESIGN: TENSION MEMBERS AND LOCAL BUCKLING

1. The structural member A-B of a transmission tower (see Figure 1) consists of back-
to-back steel equal angles (see Figure 2) connected through a line of 5 M20 bolts (d0
= 22mm) spaced at 120 mm between centres.

Using BS EN 1993-1-1 throughout and assuming steel class S355, design the back-
to-back equal angles for a maximum design tension load of NEd = 720 kN.

2. The cross-section shown in Figure 3 comprises of four S355 steel plates welded by
8 mm fillet weld legs. Determine the cross-section classification according to BS EN
1993-1-1. Note that the member is subjected to pure compressive axial load.
