CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURAL DESIGN

ONE-WAY SLABS, DOUBLY-REINFORCED AND FLANGED BEAMS

1. The central slab of a reinforced concrete floor is simply supported by longitudinal

reinforced concrete beams of 9 metres length as shown in Figure 3.

a) Assuming that the central reinforced concrete slab of 200 mm thickness is to

be designed as a one-way spanning slab to sustain floor finishes of 0.5 kN/m2
and live load of 4 kN/m2, obtain the factored bending moment MEd (in kN/m per
metre length) for ultimate limit state design assuming load combination of 1.35
dead load + 1.5 live load. Assume the self-weight of reinforced concrete to be
25 kN/m3.

b) Determine the required main area of reinforcement bars (fyk = 500 MPa) and
spacing between the reinforcement bars for the central slab for MEd obtained in
(a). Assume 200mm slab thickness, concrete class C25/30, concrete cover of
40 mm and reinforcement bars of 8 mm. There are no shear links in the slab.

2. The reinforced concrete cantilever structure part of the structure of a stadium is
shown in Figure 2. The doubly reinforced concrete beam B-C supports the self-
weight of the roof q (kN/m). A schematic drawing of the cross-section E-E is also
shown in Figure 2.

a) Assuming q = 20kN/m, obtain the factored bending moment at cross section E-

E, MEd, due to roof self-weight. Adopt the ultimate limit state combination of 1.35
dead load + 1.5 live load. Ignore the self-weight of reinforced concrete beam.

b) State the location of the main tension reinforcement bars: As,1 or As,2?

c) Determine the required compression and tension reinforcement area at cross-

section E-E. Adopt concrete cover of 30mm, 8mm shear links and that the
centroid of the tension reinforcement bars is at 12.5mm away from the shear
links. Adopt MEd = 350kNm, concrete class C30/37 and fyk = 500 MPa.

3. A typical reinforced concrete floor of a residential building is shown in Figure 3. The
reinforced concrete structure is made of concrete class C30/37. The slab has a
constant thickness of 200 mm and the central beam B1 is subjected to a factored
uniform distributed load of 44 kN/m (including permanent and variable loads).

(a) Calculate the required longitudinal reinforcement for the central beam B1. For
design purpose, consider the beam to be simply supported at both ends and that slab
and beam are monolithically connected (i.e. flanged beam). Adopt longitudinal
reinforcement diameter of 20 mm, shear link diameter of 8 mm and cover of 40 mm.
Adopt a total height of the flanged beam of 550mm and web width of 270mm.

(b) Provide a cross-section sketch of the central beam B1 with the calculated
longitudinal reinforcement on item (a). Consider a minimum of 2 reinforcement bars of
20 mm at the compressive region, shear link diameter of 8 mm and cover of 40 mm.

(c) Calculate the spacing between the main reinforcement bars for the central beam
B1.
