This assignment is in the form of a group project and is worth


25% of the total marks.

Notes:
Assignments are an important part of the learning in this course. As you do the
assignments, please make sure each member in the group actively engages with the
learning material as well.

ASSIGNMENTS
You are required to complete and submit all assignments for this course. There are three
compulsory assignments for the Project Management course. The assignment in this
particular part consists of short answer and long answer questions. Write the assignment
answers and attach the” Assignment Cover Page” and “Assignment Work Distribution
and Grades” (see Appendix 1 and Appendix 2) to your answers before submitting. Only
submit ONE assignment at a time.

SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS
Please submit your assignment as per the Course Schedule suggested by the faculty in
charge for the course. The deadline for each assignment can be seen in ACIS.
Before submitting any one of your assignments, keep the following in mind:
• Remember to attach the “Assignment Cover Page” to the assignment answers
before submitting to ACIS. The Cover Page should include the student ID, student
name and the correct course number and name (see Appendix 1).
• Remember to attach the Assignment “Work Distribution and Grades” form (see
Appendix 2).
• Always keep a copy of your assignment answers in case your assignment does not
submit in ACIS properly.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

judgement. An evaluation usually ends with a summary containing your
conclusions.
Classify Arrange information in categories. Sometimes the categories are supplied,
sometimes you are required to supply them.
Identify Recognise a phenomenon or concept and name the particular class to which it
belongs.

ASSIGNMENT PART 2
PROJECT INITIATION AND PLANNING

The questions in this assignment are ALL related to the case study below. You need to image
yourself as the Project Manager and Team Members for the project discussed in the case
study.

You will not find the answers to most of the questions for this assignment in your Textbook.
The questions are application based, which means we are assessing your understanding of the
lecture and the content in Textbook.

Finally, you are expected to use your imagination in answering the questions given. You also
encourage to consult and discuss with someone in your community who has been involved in
a similar type of project.

Case Study - SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROJECT

Social entrepreneurship is growing in popularity due to its objective of improving


public welfare. The emphasis of social entrepreneurship is on addressing social
problems, bringing about social change, enhancing quality of life, and providing
transformational value to society.

Your team has chosen to participate in a project to serve the community by


developing a one-time social entrepreneurship project. The project's concept should
be capable of resolving social issues in the selected neighbourhood. The primary
objective of the project should be to fulfil two distinct social entrepreneurship goals,
namely social and financial.

1st task: develop the social entrepreneurship idea and select the target community.

This Project Management assignment is aimed at improving your knowledge of


project management within the Social Enterprise sector. In this section of
assignment, it discusses the two phases in the project lifecycle, namely: Initiation
Phase and Planning Phase. Your team now need to apply what you have learnt from
the lecture and textbook to initiate and plan the project.

Task 1 – THE INITIATION PHASE 50 Marks

Question 1 to 14 conclude the activities and information required in the initiation phase.

Answer the following questions:


1. One of the components of the feasibility study in the initiation phase is to 5 marks
establish the client’s needs. In the process of establishing your client’s or
target community’s needs for the above-mentioned project, prepare a list
of questions that you want to ask the client/target community to clarify the
problem to be solved or the opportunities to be pursued. Use the
information in the case study to guide you when preparing this list of
questions.

2 Referring to the information in the case study above, list three (3) possible 3 marks
benefits this project may have for the community.

3. Provide two (2) other project options and alternatives that the community 2 marks
leaders may consider to address the community’s social problems.

4. The next step in the process is for the community leaders to specify the 2 marks
quality requirements. The community leaders must be encouraged to
explain the requirements of this project in terms of performance, reliability
and aesthetics of form. In your opinion, what are two (2) of the quality
requirements for this project? Elaborate your answer.

5. Referring to the case study above, what in your opinion is the purpose, 6 marks

It further, discusses the fact that stakeholders have different contributions
to make to the project and each in their own way will expect something
out of the project.

10. Apart from the internal project constraints mentioned in question 9, the 4 marks
project may also be influenced by outside factors called constraints from
the external environment. List four (4) more common external

and Textbook the Project Manager and Project Sponsor during the
feasibility study will have built a structure for the project known as the
Project Scope Statement. List six (6) items of information that must be
included in the Project Scope Statement. Provide reasons for each item.

14. Reflect to your answer questions 1-12, do you think you have adequately 2 marks
collected all the information that is contained in the Project Scope
Statement? Give a reason(s) for your answer.

Task 2 – THE PLANNING PHASE 50 Marks

Question 15 to 23 focusses the activities and information required on the planning phase.

Answer the following questions:

15. A well-structured Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is an important 5 marks


tool in project planning, it serves to identify all the work that is required
in the project and allows for the estimation (rough calculation) of the
time required and the cost of each work package. Study the example
of a WBS before answering this question.

17. Before you attempt to answer this question, first study your Course 6 marks
Textbook. Focus on understanding variable and fixed costs in projects.
In order to develop a project budget, the Project Manager needs an
understanding of these two types of costs.

20. Read the Case Study below and answer the questions: 4 marks

Now that you have calculated the estimated project budget, you need
to establish if the project is financially feasible.
For example, how many product/services need to be sold during the
event in order for the business to be profitable.

23. Procurement management includes the processes required to obtain 3 marks

business. In order to deal with procurement in projects PMBOK® or

the six (6) steps that form part of the procurement process in
projects.

and the development of a contract for project work. Identify and briefly
