POINTERS TO REVIEW IN READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

 HISTORY is the study of the past.


 POSITIVISM is the philosophy that a particular knowledge can only be true if it
can be observed in a sensorial manner.
 HISTORIOGRAPHY is the study of history as a historical discipline.
 HISTORIOGRAPHY is the history of history.
 HISTORICISM is the belief that history should be studied only for its own sake.
 History refers to two things: (1) PAST, (2) RESEARCH or INQUIRY
 History focus on human activities.
 HERODOTUS is recognized as Father of History.
 THUCYDIDES is known as the Father of Scientific History.
 POSITIVISM created the mantra “no document, no history”.
 HISTORIAN are the primary responsible for the production of historical
knowledge through continuous research and rethinking of history.
 HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION is making sense of given primary sources and
historical documents through content and contextual analysis.
 BIAS/SUBJECTIVITY is a disposition brought together by one’s context that
influences a historian’s historical interest and selection of sources and
methodology.
 Facts cannot speak for themselves.
 HISTORICAL SOURCES can be classified between PRIMARY and
SECONDARY sources.
 PRIMARY SOURCES are sources that were created and produced in the same
period as the historical subject being studied.
 SECONDARY SOURCES historical works that were written and produced
through the use of primary sources.
 INTERNAL CRITICISM is the kind of criticism employed in analyzing the content
of a primary source.
 EXTERNAL SOURCE is the kind of criticism done to establish the authenticity of
a primary source.
 History utility has always been referred to as “learning from the mistake of the
past”.
 History helps humanity to acquire a sense of self-knowledge and self-awareness
 The most infamous case of deception in Philippine history is the hoax Code of
Kalantiaw.
 The Code of Kalantiaw is a set of rules contained in an epic. Maragtas.
 American historian William Henry Scott debunked the codes authenticity due to
anachronism and lack of evidence.
 Teodoro Agoncillo wrote the Philippine Revolution 0f 1896-1898.
 Renato Constantino is a front runner of progressive and Marxist history.
 Pantayong Pananaw is the philosophical anchor of bagong kasaysayan that
emphasize the need to foster an internal discourse among the masses in writing
their history.
 The Spanish colonizers viewed Philippine history as divided into two parts: the
period of darkness and period of light.
 The Propagandista and Katipuneros held a tripartite view of history.
 Nationalist historiography focused on the masses and not on the colonizers.
 Kasaysayan is a narrative of the past that has a significance to the community
where it belongs.
