TRADITIONAL MIDWIVES’ ISSUES ON HEALTH AND SANITATION:

BAI MANGUNGUYAMU

1. The mangunguyamo wants to comply with the health and sanitation

requirements, however, due to lack of midwife kits, some sanitation and
hygiene practices cannot be ensured.
2. The Traditional midwives needs to refresh and update the midwifery trainings
on new sanitation practices.
3. There are times were at lying-in at Balila, Lantapan, Bukidnon there were no
present midwife or medical practitioner available and the mangunguyamo the
one who assists the pregnant woman to give birth.
4. The government ceased in allowing the pregnant women to give birth in
Lantapan DOH. When birth occurs, it will automatically be referred to the
nearest hospital which was 30-50 mins away which prompted the pregnant
women to opt for the mangunguyamo’s help in giving birth.

BAI PANLIBAY (Amalia T. Garciano)

1. We, the traditional midwives cannot expect the husband of the pregnant
woman to provide room that will meet the designated requirement stated in
the covenant for the delivery.
2. There was a lying-in in Balila Lantapan but the Mangunguyamo is still the one
who assists the woman giving birth.
Bai Panlibay experienced this situation a second time because the Midwives
were not available at that time.
3. They need to refresh the midwife training and upgrade the tools and
paraphernalia to be used, which to be included in the midwife kits.
4. The agreed annual ritual between the DOH and the Tribal Community was not
imposed. The purpose of the ritual is the renewal of commitments and also
asking guidance for the protection of the Pregnant Mothers and Child.
5. Due to the emergency to assist the pregnant women to give birth,
Mangunguyamo cannot communicate directly to the DOH, hospitals or lying-
in facilities as they are situated in the rural areas which is vulnerable to
accessibility both communication and transportation.
