Aya- Hello!

Hoci- Hey! (Attention getter)

Neewe- Thank You

Myaamia ribbonwork- Myaamia art form. Myaamia people

always had an interest in geometric/elongated diamonds.
Once they were exposed to silk ribbons, they naturally
made geometric patterns on garments

Geometric patterns- A pattern created from shapes, usually

repeated

Artisanship- neatness, taking care in your work

Let’s make a bookmark
inspired by the geometric patterns
found in Myaamia ribbonwork!
What you’ll need:

● Scissors
● Glue stick
● Packet which includes: a sheet of red, white and black paper ribbons
● Piece of 6” x 12” black background paper
● Piece of newsprint to lay on your desk/floor while working
Steps to Success
● Carefully cut along the lines and recycle the white pieces of paper
that have an X on them.
● Fold your 6”x 12” black background paper in half long ways (like a hot
dog). Then, open the paper so it is flat on the table.
● Glue one white paper ribbon so that the peaks line up with the crease
line on your black paper.

● Be sure that the edge of the white paper ribbon touches the outside
edge of the black paper.
● Turn your black background paper around so you can glue the other
white paper ribbon on the other side of the center crease. It should be
a mirrored, symmetrical image. You should be able to see 3 black
diamond shapes that form a geometric pattern.
● Glue one red paper ribbon so that the peaks line up with the valleys (the low
point) on the white paper ribbon.

● Be sure that the edge of the red paper ribbon touches the outside edge of the
black background paper. Can you see the white diamonds appear?
● Turn your black background paper around so you can glue the other
red paper ribbon on the other side of the center crease.
● Glue one black paper ribbon so that the
peaks line up with the valleys on the red
paper ribbon. Can you see the red
diamonds?

● Turn your black background paper around

so you can glue the other black paper
ribbon on the other side of the center
crease.

● When you are done, use scissors to trim

around the edges of the ribbons.
Demonstrate artisanship by trimming
carefully.

● Write your name on the back. Clean up.

Now you have a bookmark which represents
your new understandings of Myaamia culture!

Do you know the difference between

cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation?
