Personal Correspondence
1 Read the messages from some friends in a youth orchestra.
Then answer the questions on the following page. (5 points)
Flyte Youth Orchestra

Joe: Hi everyone! I’ve just finished watching an incredible
documentary. It’s about a musician called Ruth Boden. Ruth
is no ordinary musician. She doesn’t play in a band or an
orchestra, and she doesn’t perform in concert halls. She
goes hiking with her cello and plays it in the countryside.
Maybe we can do something similar this summer.
10

Kate: How about a trip in September? The weather’s

cooler then. I’ve always wanted to play my clarinet
somewhere unusual. I think when music is played outside,
it sounds better than in a concert hall.
15
Joe: Exactly! Ruth noticed that too. She used to go to music
summer camp in the Rocky Mountains, and they used to
practise outside. Then she started going on short hikes with
her cello, giving concerts at campsites to hikers. At times,
she played without anyone watching at all, just the rocks and
the trees.
20
Gemma: There’s no way I’m taking my trumpet on a day’s
hike. Do you know how much a trumpet costs!?

Joe: Actually, I was thinking of something a bit longer.

25 Ruth Boden dreamed of backpacking along the Appalachian
Trail, but she never managed to find the time because she
was always working. Then she met Gavin, a film-maker. He
wanted to make a documentary about her. Ruth agreed, so
they mapped out a route in the mountains. They hiked up
a mountain and Ruth performed on the summit.
Gemma: I’m sorry, Joe. It’s difficult enough to climb
30
a mountain without lugging a trumpet in my backpack!
Pete: Don’t worry, Gemma. I’ve got a better idea for
a concert. Last year, I saw a video clip about a British
orchestra. They performed on a stage in a swimming pool
35
filled with people in swimming caps and goggles. Anyway,
I’m not sure I’ll survive a hike with all my drums.
Jamie: My flute doesn’t weigh a lot, Pete – I’ll take one
of your drums in my bag! Also, my brother’s got
a professional camera – he can film us!
Joe: That would be great. So – is the “music in nature” trip
40
approved? Now let’s settle on the area for the trip.

Kate: How about doing a section of the South West Coast

Path in Cornwall? My cousin Reggie is a tour guide. I’ll ask
him to plan a walk there for us.

Joe:
