Manufacturing and
Advanced Manufacturing
Definition of Manufacturing

• Manufacturing can be defined as the application of

mechanical, physical, and chemical processes to
convert the geometry, properties, and/or appearance
of a given starting material to make finished parts or
products better, cheaper, faster and leaner
• Manufacturing involves interrelated activities that include
product design and documentation, material selection,
process planning, production, quality assurance,
management and marketing of products
Definition of Advanced Manufacturing

• Advanced manufacturing is defined as manufacturing that builds on and

encompasses the use of science, engineering, and information
technologies, along with high-precision tools and methods integrated
with a high-performance workforce and innovative business or
organizational models, to improve existing or create entirely new
materials, products, and processes
• Advanced manufacturing deals with sophisticated, yet simple to operate
and cost-effective technologies that are capable of producing geometrically
simple and light-weight products offering comparatively higher levels of
functionality, reproducibility, environmental compatibility and durability than
similar products developed using conventional manufacturing
Advanced Manufacturing
– Industrial Challenges –

• Zero defects manufacturing processes

• Flexibility, adaptability and process scalability
• Weight reduction
• Energy efficiency, waste reduction and sustainability
• Cost reduction
• Advanced automation
• Man-machine collaboration
• Environmental safety and health hazards
• Value chain integration
• Time to market reduction
• Periodic customer feedback and timely incorporation of significant product features
• Total quality management, operations management and risk management
Advanced Manufacturing
Process Technologies
• Computer technologies (e.g., CAD, CAE, CAM)
• High Performance Computing (HPC) for modeling, simulation and analysis
• Rapid prototyping (additive manufacturing)
• High Precision technologies
• Information technologies
• Advanced robotics and other intelligent production systems
• Automation
• Control systems to monitor processes
• Sustainable and green processes and technologies
• New industrial platform technologies (e.g., composite materials)
• Ability to custom manufacture
• Ability to manufacture high or low volume (scalability)
• High rate of manufacturing
Advanced Manufacturing
– Integrated Computational Materials Engineering –
