FORM OF DRUGS

NATURAL
Drugs are made from compounds found in nature. The most prevalent
natural drug sources are plants..
Example: opium and marijuana (THC) or tetrahydrocannabinol as the primary
psychoactive ingredient.

SYNTHETIC/ARTIFICIAL

Drugs that are produced by clandestine laboratories. Which includes those


drugs are controlled by law because they are used by medical practice.

CATEGORIES OF DRUGS

PRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS
Drugs requiring written authorization from the doctor to allow a purchase.

They are prescribed according to the individual's age, weight and height and
should not be taken by anyone else.

OVER-THE COUNTER-DRUGS (OTC)


Drugs that do not require prescription,

Drugs that can be purchased from any pharmacy or drugstore without


written authorization from the a doctor,

PROHIBITED DRUGS
drugs which the govern,ent does not allow to be sold.

SELF MEDICATION SYNDROME

Found in users and would be users of drugs whose sources of information


are people or literature other than doctors, pharmacists and health workers.

DOSAGES OF DRUGS

MINIMAL DOSE
The smallest amount of a drug that will produce a therapeutic effect.

MAXIMAL DOSE
The largest amount of drug that will produce a desired therapeutic effect.

TOXIC DOSE
The amount of drug that produce untoward effects or symptoms of
poisoning.

ABUSIVE DOSE
The amount needed to produce the side effects and action desired by an
individual who improperly uses it.

LETHAL DOSE
The amount of drug that will cause death.

METHODS OF ADMINISTRATION

ORAL
The safest and most convenient and economical route whenever possible.

INJECTION
This form of drug administration offer fastest response than the oral method,

• Subcutaneous (under the skin)


• Intramuscular (in a muscle)
• Intravenous (in a vein)
• Intrathecal (around the spinal cord)

INHILATION
This route make use of gaseous and volatile drugs which are inhaled and
absorbed rapidly through the mucous of the respiratory tract.

TOPICAL
The application of drugs to a body site such the skin and mucous membrane.

IONTOPHERISIS

The introduction of drugs in the deeper layer of the skin by the use of special
type of electric current for local effect,

MEDICAL USES OF DRUGS

ANALGESIC
Drugs that relieve pain.
Example: Mefenamic Acid, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol

ANTIBIOTIC
Drugs that combat or control infectious organism.
Example: Amoxicillin, Erythromycin and Penicillin

ANTIPYRETICS
drugs that can lower body temperature or fever due to infection.
Example: Paracetamol, Naproxen and Aspirin

ANTIHISTAMINES
Drugs that control or combat allergic reaction.
Example: Cetirizine, Claritin and Benadyl

CONTRACEPTIVES
Drugs that prevent the meeting of the egg cell and sperm cell. To avoid
pregnancy.

DECONGESTANT
Drugs that relieve congestion of nasal passages.
Example: Ephedrine and Vicks (Inhaler)

EXPECTORANTS
Drugs that can ease expulsion of mucus and phlegm from the lungs and throat
Example: Salbutamol, Solmux and Robitusin

LAXATIVE
Drugs that stimulate defecation and encourage bowel movement..
Example: Loperamide and Dulcolax

SEDATIVES AND TRANQUILIZER


Drugs that can calm and quiet the nerves and relieves anxiety without causing
depression and clouding mind.
Example: Barbiturates
