LESSON -1
AN UNCOMFORTABLE BED

I. Meanings {to be marked in the text book}

Exaggerated, distrustfully, cast a glance, smothered


dismayed.

II. Read the given extract and answer the questions that
follow:

“For at least another hour I remained awake, starting at


the slightest sound. Everything seemed quiet in the house
I fell asleep.”

1. What was the narrator paranoid about?


The narrator was paranoid that his friends will
play pranks on him. He did not want to be a target of
their joke. Hence was awake for a longtime.

2. Why didn’t the narrator dare to get into the bed?


The narrator was scared that his friends would
play a prank on him when he gets into the bed. He is
scared that they must have put something on a bed or
maybe it’s a cot with a broken leg. He didn’t want to be
a victim of his friends’ prank. He checked the bed
thoroughly before going to sleep.

3. Describe the incident which made the narrator get up


from his deep sleep.
The narrator was awakened when a heavy body
tumbled on him spilling some burning liquid on his
head and chest. At the same time, he heard a dreadful
noise of plates and dishes falling. With all his strength
he struck a blow at the person who fell on him and ran
out of his room.
All the chaos and commotion brought the
narrator’s friends to his room. To his dismay he saw
that it was the valet who tripped and fell on him
spilling the morning tea and breaking the dishes.

III. Make sentences:

Anxiety, enormous, darkness, conclusion.
