Broken Reparations

Scene 1 - INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM - AFTERNOON

Sitting in an almost empty, dimly lit classroom, listening to

the ticking of a clock. Two teenagers are sitting side by
side, wearing the opposite of each other’s outfit. Looking
ahead at the teacher ahead of them.

NARRATOR
Mason and Jaden are two very different students of the same
age. Jaden an artistic prodigy, but a completely isolated book
worm. However, Mason is the social butterfly of the pair,
participating in multiple clubs, making lots of friends and
being part of the student council. But the two have something
that combines them together.

TEACHER
Your parents and I have noticed some odd behaviour
coming from the two of you. Especially you, Mason.

MASON
What do you mean me?

JADEN stays silent, one headphone in, watching the interaction

between MASON and their teacher. Looking a little done with
the conversation.

TEACHER
I know the two of you are going through something
rather- awful, and that you are struggling greatly.

MASON
What? I’m not struggling, I’m fine. I’m here on time
every morning, I still go to the clubs-

TEACHER
That’s what I mean, you are over-working yourself
and you need to stop. (Looking over to JADEN) As for you

13
3
Jaden, we know you introverted already, but it’s gotten
to a point where you are barely turning up for class.

JADEN still doesn’t reply, instead looks down at the floor.

MASON looks over at JADEN.

TEACHER
(Sighs and looks between the two students) I am
giving you until 5 o’clock to work out your issues with
each other. That’s in two hours.

MASON
(DEFENSIVELY) But I have clubs to get to-

TEACHER
Both of your parents agreed to this session. Now I
will be in my office around the corner. No leaving this
room. Understand?

MASON
Yes Sir/Ma’am.

TEAHCER
(Pulling out JADEN’S headphones) Jaden. Understand?

JADEN
(Whispers) I understand.

TEACHER
Good. I’ll see you in two hours. Behave.

The TEACHER walks away from MASON and JADEN and out the
classroom without another word. Closing the door gently behind
them.
MASON and JADEN look at each other quickly before looking away
anywhere else.

Scene 2 - INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM - AFTERNOON

15 mins later.
JADEN is doodling in her notebook, MASON tapping a pen on the
table. The silence was broken when the bell went off, people
running in the hallway from detention heard.

MASON
(Throwing the pen on the table) Why is this taking
so long!

JADEN
(Jumps at the sound of the pen hitting the table)

14
4
You could try reading a book, pass the time.

MASON
(scoffs) A book? You’re joking right.

JADEN
(Flinches) Sorry, It was just a suggestion.

MASON notices how him shouting effected JADEN and started

feeling guilty.

MASON

(Clearing his throat) I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to

shout. I just don’t like doing nothing.

JADEN
I-It’s ok.

They both fall silent. JADEN’S notebook forgotten. They both

look ahead.

MASON
I don’t even know why I’m here. (Standing up and
walking in front of JADEN) There’s nothing wrong with me
alright!

JADEN
I’m not the one who put you in here with me, I want
to leave as much as you.

MASON
(Sitting on the desk in front) Can we at least talk.
I’m going insane here.

JADEN
(Closing her book sighing) Fine. What do you want to
talk about?

MASON
I don’t know, anything. What do you do like to do?

JADEN
(Clears her throat) I like to draw or read.
Depending on my mood. You?

15
5
MASON
I don’t know, studying, I guess.

JADEN
(Amused) You willingly study for fun. Are you
joking?

MASON
I don’t get to have fun, I have to get good grades
to do something with my life.

JADEN
Could still relax once in a while. Probably why
you’re so uptight.

MASON
Yeah, Yeah whatever.

MASON hops off the desk and walks back over to his seat,
turning his chair to look at JADEN. He smiles at her, and
JADEN raises her eyebrows at him.

Scene 3 - INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM - Afternoon

Both MASON and JADEN were sitting on a desk about an hour in

to their two hours. Eating snacks from their bags. MASON
lowered his guard, and JADEN opened up more, Sharing their
favourite movies and song titles.
Until MASON brings up the sore subject.

MASON
So, why are you here Jaden, why did the teacher
think you needed help or whatever.

JADEN
(Trying to finish chewing) What do you mean?

MASON
What are you struggling with?

JADEN
(Defences going back up) I don’t want to talk about
it.

MASON
C’mon it can’t be that bad. Just tell me.

JADEN

16
6
NO! It’s none of your business! If you want to my
business so badly, why don’t you tell me yours?

MASON
What? No, that is my business!

JADEN
Then stop asking me mine!

MASON
(Crossing his arms facing away from her) Fine!

JADEN
(Doing the same) Good!

Scene 4 - INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM - AFTERNOON

MASON and JADEN are sat across from each other, JADEN again
quietly reading a book while MASON is, again, tapping on the
table. JADEN is mouthing out what she is reading
subconsciously.

JADEN
(QUIET READING) But John says if I feel so I shall
neglect proper self-control, before him at least and that
makes me very tired.

MASON
(CUTTING OFF) I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted
one downstairs that opened on the piazza and
had roses all over the window.

JADEN
(Surprised)Wait? You read the yellow wallpaper!?

MASON
Yeah, I wrote my English GCSE on it.

JADEN
Oh, alright...

A FEW MOMENTS OF SILENCE.

JADEN
Why?

MASON
17
7
Cause it’s a good book? Easy to analyse?

JADEN
I know that but- but why? Why this story?
I don’t take you as someone who would be into
suffragette era fiction.

MASON
(QUIETLY) I related to the main character

JADEN
(LAUGHING QUIETLY) How? It's about a woman being
stuck and losing her mind in her own home!

MASON
(YELLING) I know this! I don’t know I just-
(STUTTERING) I relate to feeling trapped.

JADEN closes her book.

JADEN
What do you mean?

MASON sighs and leans back stressing.

MASON
My parents, they want me to do well- a lot, a lot a
lot and- they want me to do- to get a good job and
go to a great university and-

JADEN looks concerned.

MASON
But it's not a bad thing! They just want me to
succeed! They want me to be happy when I’m older!

FEW MOMENTS QUIET

JADEN
But are you happy now?

LONG SILENCE

BEGIN FLASHBACK INT - HALLWAY MASONS HOUSE – EVENING

MASONS parents are yelling at him. They are not shown to the
audience directly.

MASONS MOTHER
18
8
(DISSAPOINTED SIGH) MASON, two fives?
Really!? Is this how we raised you?

MASONS FATHER
Your mother and I expect at least seven’s from
you young man.

MASON
I tried my hardest! I-I've just-

MASONS FATHER
What? What have you done? You come home
and immediately go to sleep!

MASONS MOTHER
Do we need to get you a new tutor? Or do
we need to transfer you again?

MASON
(DISTRESSED YELLING) No! No Ill- Ill study
more I wont sleep! I promise.

MASONS FATHER
Do you think that this is funny? When your
next MOCKS come around there better be all
sevens here!

MASON
Please be- just- please calm down! I run three clubs and
have founded four! I- I need to stay late to get them all
sorted!
MASONS MOTHER
And whose fault is that!

MASON pauses. Scared.

MASON
(QUIETLY) Yours...

SILENCE

NOISE OF SLAPPING

END OF FLASHBACK – INT CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

MASON looks scared as he goes and reaches for his face before
stopping and continuing to tap his pen as he looks
considerably more nervous.

19
9
JADEN
Sorry, I-

MASON
Its ok- your- your fine.

JADEN
(UPSET AND DISRTESSED) No! It's not okay!
Its- Its wrong.

MASON
Sorry if- if I made you worried, I really
didn’t mean to.

JADEN
It would be weird if I wasn’t worried! You
need- You need actual help for that!
LONG SILENCE

MASON
Why do you like it?

JADEN
What?

MASON
The book! Why do you like the book?

JADEN
Well I guess I relate to- um.

MASON
Go on-

JADEN
Stop being a dick!

(PAUSE)

JADEN
Sorry- sorry...

JADEN takes a deep breath and puts her book away and starts to
tent her hands and fiddle with them.

MASON
No pressure-

110
10
JADEN
(CUTTING OFF) No- no I- you spilled your guts I
have to spill mine just- give me a minute.

(SHORT PAUSE) JADEN moves and sits on the table, patting the
side for MASON to sit next to her.

JADEN
So- a year ago, I met this guy, he was nice,
really nice and- eventually I was at the age where I
could move out and so, I begged for my parents'
consent to move in with him. Eventually they folded
and let me leave.

MASON moves to look at JADEN then back at the clock. It reads

4:30

MASON
Get on with it.

JADEN
(ANNOYED) Alright, Jesus, so I moved in with
him and it was fine, then, he sort of started to
change. Not- not too bad, at first- just. Jabs at my
appearance and some other stuff. He’d make up for it
after, though! He took me to London and bought me
new clothes. Even had a nice dinner.

JADEN
(NERVOUSLY) But sometimes- he would like, get
mad at me for still talking to my parents- he, he
was clingy but- whenever, (ANNOYEDLY) Whenever I
tried to be affectionate he would get mad- and-
well...

MASON
(Concerned) Did, did he hurt you?

JADEN
(RUSHING) No! No, no, no! He would just- yell at
me. Like a lot.

MASON
Jaden?... Are you lying?

JADEN
What? No! I’m not- I don’t- I don’t lie!

111
11
MASON
You can tell me, I’m not gonna tell anyone.

JADEN
I don’t believe that! Liar! Just like he lied! He
said he cared about me but-

MASON
(YELLING) I’m not lying! I don’t lie! I never lie why
can't- why doesn’t anyone get that! You don’t get it; my
parents don’t get it! Hell, Evan our teacher doesn’t
understand me!

JADEN
Your- you're doing exactly what he did! You lie,
apologise, care then you’ll- you’ll hurt me again!

MASON
See! You did lie!

JADEN
Fuck off! No wonder your parents hit you! So
annoying.

(LONG SILENCE)

JADEN
Mason...? Mason, I'm sorry I didn’t
mean that-

MASON
Just be quiet... please?

Scene 5 – INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

JADEN is sat messing with her pen, while MASON is sat reading.

JADEN
Fifteen minutes.

MASON
What?

JADEN
We have fifteen minutes left.

MASON
Okay. What about it.

112
12
JADEN
I’m sorry.

MASON
Why.

JADEN
What?

MASON
Why are you sorry? You were right.

JADEN
No, I wasn’t. I was wrong. I got angry and took it
out on you. Trying to get you to shut up.

MASON
Well, you succeeded

JADEN
(DEEP INHALE) I’m sorry! Why can't you accept that!

MASON
Cause I don’t really get apologies? When peop- My
parents hurt me, they don’t say sorry. Not really. So, I
don’t' expect apologies of anyone else.

JADEN
Well can you at least knowledge that I feel bad ?

(SILENCE)

MASON
Sure.

JADEN
Thank you. So... What’s your favourite book?

MASON
Perks of being a wallflower. Yours?

JADEN
(EXCITED) Oh! I’m not too sure actually. I read a lot,
but I’ve never really had a favourite.

MASON
(QUIETLY) Oh here we go-
JADEN

113
13
I really hate Colleen Hoover books, they just-UGH, they
are very bland but I kind of grew up on Warrio Cats- I
love discworld and the world Terry Prachet creates-
(RAMBLING ON)

MASON
I like lacrosse.

JADEN
Oh?

MASON
I really like lacrosse. My parents they- they
Never really approved of the sports as it wasn’t as
academic as they wanted.

JADEN
Want to tell me about it?

MASON
(HAPPY/SURPRISED) Well, when I was younger, I really
liked watching sports- I loved the technical aspects of
it! The theory and the just- it's so interesting to me!
(RAMBLES ON TOO)

NARRATER
And for those last 15 minutes, they talked. About
everything and anything. Keeping the comfort alive and
the suffering at bay.

Scene 6 – INT: EMPTY CLASSROOM – 5:00 PM

JADEN
So yeah! I would love to be an artist one day- but- for now
writing is my main passion.

MASON
I get that! I wanna be a sports commentator but I don’t
know where my “Founder of the chess club” fits on that
CV-

TEACHER
Nice to see you two getting along.

MASON AND JADEN

(SURPRISED TALKING TOGETHER) Oh hi!

TEACHER
(HAPPY) I’ve come to tell you that it is 5:00pm.

114
14
Despite how much fun you guys have been having, I’m
afraid you have to leave now. I’m the only faculty
member on site.

They nod together and begin to pack away their stuff.

TEACHER
Now seeing as this session proved a success, I will
inform your parents of it and try to schedule
meetings with them when the results begin to show.

MASON
What do you mean?

TEACHER
Well, I hope because of this little meeting you will
begin to go easy on yourself. Take a break and relax
every once in a while. And Jaden, I hope to see more of
you in class from now on.

JADEN
(NERVOUS) Yeah, You will.
Does your parents really need to know about this. I
mean, it’s not legally binding or anything.

TEACHER
Unfortunately, we kept you both over the legal
extended period, we have to inform them.

JADEN
(RUSHED AND WORRIED) Well, Mason stays after school
most days anyway, we don’t have to inform his parents,
just tell them he was in a club or something.

TEACHER
Jaden, what has gotten into you? Before today you
never spoke, let alone care about anyone else.

JADEN
Yeah, but- it's

MASON
(PLACING A HAND ON HER SHOULDER AND THEN HUGS HER
SLIGHTLY) Jay, it’s ok. It’s time my parents and I should
talk about what I want for once.
It’s ok to tell them, it’s fine.

The teacher nods and turns away, leaving the classroom.

JADEN

115
15
Are you sure that’s clever.

Scene 7 – EXT: OUTSIDE COLLEGE – AFTERNOON

Both students open the double doors to leave their school for
the day.
MASON
Come on. I’ll walk you home.

JADEN
Sure.

THE END.
