Essay on Epochs of Globalization

European Colonial Conquest (late 15th Century)

Analyzing the European Colonial Conquest that happened late 15th century, I can say that
it was a big step of globalization considering how early it was where there was still in lack of
communication between countries, no convenient mediums of transportation, and few to zero
knowledge about the world. There are three main objectives of colonization that are also called
“3 G’s” accordingly. These are: God- which is to spread Christianism; Gold- not literally
referring to the mined ones but are spices, that are very important for Europeans as they were
valued equally as gold and gems that drives the economy that time; and Glory- more countries
colonized means a lot more power making them more glorified. One of the greatest contributions
of this epoch is the “First Voyage Around the World” initiated by Ferdinand Magellan that led to
the strengthening of theory of world as a round.

Let me give my perspective about European Colonial Conquest and how it affects culture
especially our country. I can say that this wave of globalization brought good neither bad to us
as a before being a complete indigenous country. I think this period is very significant to us,
Filipinos as we first handily experience this epoch and up to this date, its results and impacts are
still visible and embarked to us. Magellan’s visit introduced as to new beliefs, religious images
such as the Santo Nino, and Christianity that is the most dominant religion in the Philippines and
globally. With them bringing Christianity, we now celebrate fiestas and even Christmas.
Cuisines are also largely influenced by the Spaniards like relleno, morcon, paella, caldereta, and
more. It also brought a huge effect on the language of the locals such as the Chavacano, being
spoken at Zamboanga due to the 1635 Spanish colonization. Surnames in the Philippines are
mostly from Spanish. The negative effect of their colonization is primarily the loss of culture in
the country. I feel that we lost identity by them forcingly exposing us to their culture. This
includes the practiced tribal religions such as Anitism and Dayawanism, declining number of
tribes such as Igorot and more. This day, we are not completely the country before we were, and
I think we must accept it as it was a part of being a developing country. The best thing we can do
is to preserve and protect them as much as we can.
