IMPACT OF FINANCIAL PROBLEMS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

STUDENTS IN ARTS AND DESIGN GRADE 11 BENCAB OF

TAGAYTAY CITY SCIENCE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL –
INTEGRATED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION

Every person needs finance, the money required to meet an individual's or family's basic
needs. Access to sufficient funds is the most important to every human being, for us to obtain
stability and financial security to cover our necessities. Not having enough money can limit a
person’s access to food, proper housing, health care, and other basic needs, especially for
those living in poverty.

One of the biggest problems that our nation is facing is poverty due to financial problems
and economic issues. This is the most challenging situation for anyone, particularly for an
average student. Many students are working at the same time for them to at least help with the
finances of the school, and it is difficult to handle both at once (The Filipino Collection, 2013). In
addition, tuition costs are always rising in different schools and institutions. Students invest a lot
of time and money, together with the costs of school and other educational components.
Including the primary materials that a student needs, such as paper, notebooks, pencils, pens,
and other school supplies. Moreover, other expenses along with transportation fees, food, and
school projects alongside printing and photocopy expenses and little contributions to class or
school organizations.

Philstar's research shows that the majority of Filipinos believe that the world revolves
around money, while the minority quotes “Money can’t buy happiness.” However, the happiness
of others is to study and graduate, yet how are they going to continue if they do not have
enough money. It takes a lot of money to get into a good school or university. It is also
customary to ask for an allowance, whether it may be for transportation or snacks, before going
to school, and that proves that money is a necessity not only for students but for all people.

Many students' academic performance declines due to financial hardship or lack of

resources in school. This results in a lot of students' academic performances in schools being
greatly affected. The decrease in students’ grades are the most highly affected because the
students can not meet the requirements of every subject because of the shortage of incomes.

The strand Arts and Design or the courses that are aligned to art are considered by
others as complicated and expensive courses to take. As an artist, a lot of materials and tools
are needed to make art projects. Some of these tools and materials are graphite pencils,
acrylics, paper, pens, draft tables, and other materials and tools used to create. It is equivalent
to the lack of money needed to support the students until they graduate. However, according to
Deped.gov.ph (2013), the difficulty of it is not considered because the source of income needed
for matriculation or tuition became a harder problem.
This study is conducted to deepen the understanding of the impact of financial problems
