First Row Transition Elements

Instructions: Answer all the questions on folder leaves

1. List the first row of transition elements with their symbols and electronic structure (5 marks)

2. Describe five (5) characteristics of transition elements (5 marks)

3. Determine the electronic configurations of the ions and hence their oxidation numbers (5 marks)

4. Give reasons for the relatively small changes in atomic radii, ionic radii and ionization
energies of the elements across the period (5 marks)

5. Explain the formation of coloured ions by transition element.


Mention the d-orbital separation of energy in octahedral complexes (4 marks)

6. Compare the properties of transition elements when compared to calcium


Properties include melting point, density, atomic radius, ionic radius , first IE and conductivity (6 marks)

7. Predict the shapes of complexes of transition elements. Show with drawn examples (6 marks)


8. Outline how to show the various oxidation states of vanadium. Refer to E values (2 marks)

9. Discuss at least three transition elements as redox systems.


Include half-equations in your answer (6 marks)

10. Explain the principle of ligand exchange looking at stability constants, CO/O2 haemoglobin and
NH3(aq)/Cu2+ (aq) system (6 marks)
