Unit -2 Reading

Turks spread their customs and values through various cultural elements. Nasreddin Hodja stories are one of those
elements. Nasreddin Hodja is the hero of humour in Turkish culture. His hometown is Hortu, Sivrihisar. He was a clergyman
in Akşehir. He is famous for his witty replies, wisdom and fairness in the stories.

Below is a story from Nasreddin Hodja with his witty reply:

Nasreddin Hodja one day sees a garden in the neighbourhood. He suddenly enters the garden. He sees a lot of fruit trees:
some apple trees, a few orange trees, and two cherry trees. He sees some ripe fruits and wants to have one ripe apple. He
reaches for an apple but the branch breaks off. His neighbor hears the noise and gets out of his home.
He starts crying:

Neighbour- “What are you doing there?”

Hodja- “Oh the storm. It is the storm’s fault.”
Neighbour- “Really! How about this broken branch? Is it because of the storm, too?”
Hodja- “That is a good question! Shall we think about this together?”

Are you looking for a free time activity? Here is a great activity: Mandala Art. What is Mandala Art? Mandala means
circle in Sanskrit. I am going to draw my mandala figure soon.

What do I need for this?

Look at my equipment!
I have got some paper, coloured pencils, different size doting tools, a glass of water, crayons, mandala templates, a
ruler, an eraser and a compass. You don’t need many materials.
Now I am starting!
Look at my drawing. Follow my pencil. I am finding the center of my paper first. I am using my compass to draw the
main circle. Now, I am using my ruler to mark the circle. I am now drawing lines between the dots I marked on the
circle. Look, it is time to take my pencil and go back to the centre to draw my first geometrical shape. As you see, I
am drawing more and more symbols, some geometrical shapes around the centre. You can draw circles, rectangles,
squares, triangles etc. While drawing you should do nothing but concentrate. You should only focus on the shapes,
their size, their colour (para. 1).
I am not drawing a complex figure. And this is the final shape. My piece of art..

Now, it is time to colour the figure. Let me choose my colours. Umm.. I will use light and dark green, white and dark
and light orange colours. I am free to use any colour. I like using different shades of the same colour. I am picking my
