Reflection

An event called Basic Life Support: A Key to Life Saving Situations was hosted at the
Lyceum of the Philippines University in Manila held at the JPL Freedom Hall which took place
on January 10, 2023. The purpose of the event was to discuss basic life support such as first aid
and bandaging techniques, as well as how and why it is important to know and to acquire
lifesaving skills like these. There were two expert speakers invited, the first speaker was a
10-year Philippine Red Cross volunteer, Mr. Jademar R. Peroy, followed by a licensed health
practitioner at Lyceum of the Philippines University - Manila’s Health Service Department, Dr.
Ana Margarita Reyes. They both possessed outstanding insight when it came to matters of
fundamental life support.

The majority of the information that Mr. Jademar R. Peroy shared was based on his
personal experience on his time spent serving as a volunteer with the Philippine Red Cross. He
briefly explained the mission of the Red Cross as well as the broad range and kind of assistance
they offer. During the peak of the pandemic, not only did they put in a lot of effort but they also
assisted a large number of people, which is another noteworthy aspect of this organization.
Additionally, he mentioned that the ability to listen was the most important factor in being
acknowledged as one of them. When he led a game, he not only kept the interest of the audience
but also got them actively involved. This made his talk more efficient and fun to listen to, while
the second speaker, Dr. Ana Margarita Reyes, focused mostly on sharing the knowledge she has
obtained working in the medical sector. She went through the purpose of administering first aid
as well as the reason for its existence. She also gave examples of the proper way to perform
CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, bandaging techniques, the correct approach to clean and dress
wounds, and the stages involved in reacting to an emergency and providing basic life support.

To conclude what I have learned, I would say that this event was both informative and
enjoyable for me. I realized that having just a small bit of knowledge about something like this
may be very beneficial when it comes to dealing with unexpected emergencies. Professionals of
first aid and those who are trained in the field have the power to save lives. Everything I've
picked up here will serve me well in the long run, and I can't wait to put it to use when I meet
others who are in need of assistance.
